Algeria Denounces French Duplicity: A Firm Rejection of Paris’s Arrogance and Violations

Algiers, Algeria | In an unambiguous stance, Algeria has delivered a resounding rebuke to France’s latest maneuver, firmly rejecting the content and implications of a letter sent by French President Emmanuel Macron to his Prime Minister. The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a strongly worded communiqué, dismantled what it described as a biased and disingenuous narrative aimed at exonerating France of its full responsibility in the ongoing deterioration of bilateral relations.

Contrary to the claims advanced in Macron’s letter, the Algerian government asserts that it is France—not Algeria—that has systematically breached bilateral agreements and disregarded both international and its own domestic laws. The Algerian response leaves little room for ambiguity: Paris has chosen confrontation over cooperation, pressure over partnership, and distortion over diplomatic truth.

France’s Evasion of Responsibility

The Ministry categorically rejected France’s attempt to shift the blame onto Algeria for the diplomatic crisis, labeling it a blatant distortion of facts. Official statements issued throughout the crisis have clearly outlined the sequence of events and the proportional, reciprocal measures taken by Algeria in response to provocations from the French side.

Far from being an impartial actor, France has, according to Algerian authorities, repeatedly violated key agreements, including the 1968 Algerian-French agreement on migration and residency, the 1974 consular convention, and the 2013 agreement on visa exemptions for diplomatic and service passports. These violations, Algeria contends, form a pattern of bad faith, colonial arrogance, and legal malpractice.

The Algerian government minced no words in describing France’s actions as an abuse of power and a calculated campaign to undermine the rights of Algerian nationals residing in France. Many of these individuals, the statement notes, have been subject to arbitrary expulsions and denied the legal recourse guaranteed under both French and European law.

The response further exposes how France has deliberately sought to hollow out the role of Algerian consular protection, thereby violating the fundamental principle of state sovereignty and the rights of foreign nationals.

Rejection of Pressure Tactics

Algeria unequivocally condemned France’s approach to the crisis as being grounded in “force, injunctions, and ultimatums.” Such methods, the Ministry asserted, are incompatible with mutual respect and are doomed to fail. Algeria “does not yield to pressure, threats, or blackmail,” the communiqué stated, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to defending its dignity and independence on the world stage.

The suspension of the visa exemption agreement for French holders of diplomatic and service passports was met with a decisive Algerian response: full denunciation of the agreement. Algeria will now apply strict reciprocity, subjecting French diplomats to the same visa conditions imposed on their Algerian counterparts.

In light of France’s revival of the controversial “visa-leverage mechanism” tied to migrant readmissions, Algeria condemned the move as a violation of the 1968 agreement and the 1950 European Convention on Human Rights. The Algerian government pledged to provide unwavering consular support to its citizens in France, ensuring that their legal rights are upheld in the face of systemic abuse and arbitrary measures.

Diplomatic Retaliation and the Road Ahead

Algeria revealed that France has, for over two years, refused to issue accreditations to several Algerian consular officials, a fact it says further exposes the duplicity of Macron’s letter. In accordance with the principle of reciprocity, Algeria has responded in kind and will continue to do so until France lifts its own restrictions.

In its closing remarks, the Foreign Ministry emphasized Algeria’s readiness to address outstanding bilateral disputes through diplomatic channels—but only on the basis of mutual respect and adherence to international obligations.
