Dr. Djilali Benmahamed to Represent Algeria in Steering Global Gas Policy for 2025–2028 as the Nation Strengthens Its Influence in Energy Governance

Beijing – May 28, 2025 – Algeria has been elected to the Executive Committee of the International Gas Union (IGU) during the 29th edition of the World Gas Conference, held in Beijing, People’s Republic of China, from May 19 to 23, 2025. The election reflects growing global confidence in Algeria’s technical, institutional, and strategic capabilities in the gas industry.

Representing Algeria in this influential role is Dr. Djilali Benmahamed, an esteemed member of the Algerian Gas Industry Association (AGIA) and Director of Planning, Studies, and Performance at Sonatrach’s LNG and Separation Division. Dr. Benmahamed will serve on the IGU’s executive body for the 2025–2028 triennium, during which Italy will assume the presidency of the union.

This executive committee plays a central role in defining the strategic direction of the IGU, supervising all committee workstreams, setting policy priorities, and tracking global transformations in the gas sector, including decarbonization pathways, market volatility, and evolving geopolitical risks.

A Strategic Milestone for Algeria’s Energy Diplomacy

This appointment is far more than symbolic; it cements Algeria’s strategic presence within one of the most critical global platforms for gas dialogue and energy policy formulation. It also marks an institutional acknowledgment of the longstanding expertise of the AGIA, whose technical contributions and policy foresight have consistently advanced the gas industry both domestically and internationally.

This election reflects the renewed momentum and forward-looking governance vision promoted by AGIA. Under this new dynamic, the association is enhancing its openness to stakeholders, reinforcing international dialogue, and positioning Algeria as a pillar of stability and strategic foresight within global energy governance structures.

Proven Track Record in Global Gas Leadership

Over the past three trienniums, AGIA has chaired the IGU’s most prestigious bodies, notably the Strategy and Foresight Committee, widely recognized as the intellectual engine of the Union. Algeria has also led the Gas Markets Committee and the LNG Committee, solidifying its place as a top-tier contributor to sectoral advancement and thought leadership.

The AGIA, chaired by Mr. Rachid Hachichi, President and CEO of Sonatrach, was established in 1993 by Sonatrach and Sonelgaz to create a platform for scientific, technical, and policy exchange. Its mission: to unite national expertise, foster innovation, and ensure the advancement of Algeria’s gas industry in alignment with international best practices.
