Algeria Elected to Lead Global Labour Standards Committee at ILO Summit in Geneva

Algiers, Algeria | June 14th, 2025 — In a historic recognition of its unwavering commitment to international labour law and social justice, Algeria has been elected to preside over the Committee on the Application of Standards during the 113th session of the International Labour Conference held in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 3 to 13, 2025.

Algeria was represented in this high-profile forum by Belgacem Tabaï, Adviser to the Permanent Mission of Algeria to the United Nations Office in Geneva. His election to lead the Committee is widely viewed as a vote of confidence in Algeria’s growing stature within multilateral international institutions, particularly the International Labour Organization (ILO).

This appointment is not only symbolic but strategically significant. It underscores Algeria’s active and consistent engagement with the ILO’s supervisory mechanisms, as well as its sustained efforts to align national legislation with international labour conventions. Speaking at the adoption of the Committee’s report, Tabaï emphasized that Algeria’s election reflects the trust and respect it enjoys among ILO member states and social partners.

He also recalled that the Committee on the Application of Standards has, since its establishment in 1926, played a vital role in ensuring compliance with international labour norms and promoting fundamental workers’ rights. Its tripartite structure—bringing together governments, employers, and workers—makes it one of the cornerstones of ILO’s global oversight system.

Tabaï further highlighted Algeria’s positive track record of cooperation with ILO supervisory bodies, particularly through its regular submission of implementation reports on ratified conventions and its prompt responses to expert committee observations. These efforts, he said, are part of a broader legislative reform agenda guided by the vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at reinforcing Algeria’s identity as a social state rooted in equity, solidarity, and labour rights.

The Committee’s work during this session, marked by constructive dialogue and mutual respect, was widely praised by all participating delegations. It yielded tangible results that reinforced the ILO’s fundamental principle of tripartite dialogue, which remains a distinctive and powerful feature of its governance and monitoring system.
