Algiers – December 2025 – Algeria has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the protection of its National Memory and the preservation of historical symbols as both a constitutional obligation and a profound moral duty, declared Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, Abdelmalek Tacherift, during a plenary session of the People’s National Assembly on Thursday dedicated to oral questions directed at members of the government.
Tacherift firmly rejected attempts to undermine or distort the nation’s history, affirming that such maneuvers “will in no way weaken the strength of the National Memory nor the attachment of Algerians to their historical symbols and national values.” He emphasized that the criminalization of any offense against the National Memory is rooted not merely in legal codification but in a deeply anchored moral imperative that upholds collective dignity and historical sovereignty.
The minister highlighted the existence of a comprehensive legislative and regulatory framework that “has established robust protection of national values and symbols, effectively putting an end to attempts to harm Algeria’s history.” Within the context of an integrated governmental strategy, the Ministry of Mujahideen collaborates with various sectors and specialized institutions to implement “national mechanisms designed to shield the National Memory from distortion and denial,” reaffirming the centrality of institutional vigilance in the face of historical revisionism.
Tacherift further underscored that reforming the legal and regulatory system governing the sector of Mujahideen and Rights Holders remains a principal priority. The ongoing amendment of the law relating to mujahid and chahid status, he said, is currently undergoing in-depth examination at the ministerial commission level, with the objective of enhancing the clarity and efficiency of legal provisions. Once finalized, the revised legislation will be submitted to the legislative authority in accordance with established procedures, signaling the state’s commitment to modernization and legal precision.
Beyond legal reform, the minister addressed the state’s multi-layered efforts to document historic sites, record testimonies, preserve cemeteries of martyrs, and uphold the rights of mujahideen and descendants of chouhada. These measures, he explained, respond directly to instructions issued by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has repeatedly stressed the imperative of “preserving the National Memory, transmitting the oath of the noble martyrs, and ensuring the welfare of mujahideen, in order to cement the culture of recognition, reinforce national cohesion, and consolidate the internal front.”
As part of this nationwide endeavor, Tacherift disclosed the documentation of 5,215 historic monuments, 1,299 cemeteries of chouhada, and the collection of 46,305 testimonies, amounting to more than 33,482 recorded hours. These figures underscore both the historical depth of Algeria’s liberation struggle and the extensive institutional commitment to preserving its traces for future generations.
