Algiers, Algeria– Tuesday, July 15, 2025 | Algeria has successfully transitioned from a country heavily dependent on the import of construction materials to a self-sufficient and exporting nation, according to Minister of Housing, Urbanism, and the City, Mohamed Tarek Belaribi. Speaking on Tuesday during the official opening of the 44th Annual General Assembly of Shelter Afrique, Belaribi attributed this transformation to a clear strategic vision and a resolute national will to attain economic sovereignty.

The minister highlighted that Algeria now produces nearly 42 million tonnes of cement annually, along with 7 million tonnes of reinforcing steel, approximately 280 million square meters of ceramic tiles, and 40 million tonnes of bricks. These figures not only signal a substantial leap in Algeria’s industrial capabilities, but also demonstrate the country’s ability to support large-scale domestic and regional infrastructure projects.

“This industrial capacity is powered by modern production lines and a strong industrial base, allowing Algeria to not only meet its internal demand but also supply major construction ventures across African nations,” Belaribi stated.

He emphasized that this robust momentum in the construction and public works sector, bolstered by the growing availability and quality of domestically produced building materials, has significantly increased the sector’s contribution to the national economy. According to Belaribi, construction now accounts for nearly 12.9% of Algeria’s Gross Domestic Product, underscoring the strategic importance of this sector in national development and regional economic integration.
