Algeria Engages in Initiative to Establish African Forum of Hydrocarbon Regulators
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers — Algeria has taken part in preliminary discussions on the creation of an African forum of hydrocarbon regulators, an initiative examined during a meeting between the President of the Hydrocarbon Regulatory Authority (ARH), Amine Remini, and the Secretary-General of the African Petroleum Producers Organization, Farid Ghezali.
According to a statement issued by the Authority, the meeting, held in early April, provided an opportunity to address issues of shared interest, with particular emphasis on the regulatory and oversight missions of the ARH in the hydrocarbons sector.
During the discussions, Ghezali outlined the key challenges facing global and African energy markets, placing the proposed forum within the broader context of evolving regulatory demands. The talks focused on the planned launch of an African platform bringing together regulatory bodies, with the objective of fostering greater coherence across the sector.
In this regard, Remini welcomed the initiative, noting that it is primarily intended to harmonize regulatory frameworks and promote the adoption of best practices in the hydrocarbons domain.
For its part, APPO indicated that both sides expressed convergence of views regarding the relevance of the initiative, underscoring the importance of embedding it within a clearly defined roadmap structured around specific stages, priorities, and milestones.
