Algiers Exposes Covert Operation by French Interior Ministry as a Breach of Sovereignty and Diplomatic Protocol

Algiers, Algeria | May 11th, 2025 — Algerian authorities have expelled two agents from France’s domestic intelligence agency, “The General Directorate for Internal Security” ‘La Direction Générale de la Sécurité Intérieure (DGSI),’ after uncovering their attempt to infiltrate the country using false diplomatic documents. The incident, which has sparked considerable reaction, highlights growing strains in Algerian-French relations.

According to Al24News, a state-run Algerian television channel, the two French intelligence officers entered Algeria under the guise of embassy personnel, using forged diplomatic passports. Dispatched by French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, the agents were swiftly intercepted and identified by Algeria’s security services, which exposed their true affiliation with the DGSI.

The agents, who had not received any official accreditation from Algerian authorities and failed to comply with the established legal frameworks governing bilateral relations, were immediately expelled and barred from re-entering Algerian territory.

Speaking to Al24News, Fayçal Métaoui, a journalist and advisor at the Presidency of the Republic, confirmed the incident and emphasized that Algeria had acted entirely within its legal rights.

“When one enters a national territory using a diplomatic passport, they are obligated to notify all concerned parties and adhere to the Vienna Convention and existing consular agreements between the two countries,” Métaoui stated.

He went on to describe the operation as

“yet another maneuver by this French Interior Minister [Bruno Retailleau], who has been waging a political crusade against Algeria for several months. He is using every means available to exert pressure on a country that remains unwavering in defending its sovereignty.”

The incident is expected to further chill relations between Algiers and Paris, particularly at a time when Algeria has repeatedly signaled its intolerance toward any form of covert interference or diplomatic overreach.
