Algiers, Algeria– Monday, July 14, 2025 | In a move to position Algeria as a competitive tourist destination, Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Houria Meddahi, has announced that the country aims to welcome 4 million tourists by the end of 2025. The ambitious target was unveiled on Sunday, July 13, during a national study day in Algiers dedicated to digital innovation in the tourism sector.

Speaking at the event, Minister Meddahi reported that in 2024 alone, Algeria recorded approximately 3.5 million tourist arrivals, including 2.5 million foreign visitors and nearly one million members of the Algerian diaspora. She attributed this performance to intensified promotional campaigns and the implementation of key administrative facilitations—particularly the easing of visa procedures, with a focus on the vast and promising southern regions of the country.

Meddahi underlined the dual economic and social dimension of tourism in Algeria’s national development strategy. “Tourism is not merely a leisure sector—it is a powerful job creator,” she emphasized, noting that tourism activities have already led to the generation of nearly 450,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Beyond tourism, the minister shed light on the vibrant role of handicrafts in supporting local economies. “Algeria currently counts 460,000 certified artisans who have collectively created more than 1.2 million jobs,” she stated, reinforcing the sector’s contribution to inclusive economic growth.

In terms of structural reforms, Minister Meddahi announced the rollout of a comprehensive digital transformation plan aimed at modernizing the governance of tourism operations. This initiative includes the development of unified, secure online platforms for licensing, booking, and payments. These portals are expected to integrate international payment systems, providing global access to Algeria’s touristic offerings and facilitating smoother transactions for both domestic and foreign tourists.

Applauding the proactive engagement of hospitality institutions, Meddahi acknowledged the increasing adoption of digital tools across the sector. “Tourists can now explore, compare, and book their travel packages online with confidence, which marks a qualitative leap in how we connect with the modern traveler,” she declared.

In closing, the Minister reaffirmed her department’s commitment to supporting innovation and cooperation among public and private actors, asserting that these efforts are crucial to transforming Algeria into a major Mediterranean destination that fully leverages its cultural depth, natural diversity, and artisanal heritage.
