Algiers, Algeria | May 16th, 2025 — In a promising development for Algerian football, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced on Thursday the possibility of arranging a friendly match against Spain in 2026. This potential fixture was discussed during a key meeting between FAF President Walid Sadi and his Spanish counterpart, Rafael Louzan Abal, held in Asunción, Paraguay, on the sidelines of the 75th FIFA Congress.

According to an official FAF statement, the discussions centered on establishing a strategic partnership aimed at the development of youth competitions for both male and female players, as well as the promotion of futsal. These initiatives reflect a shared commitment to fostering football at all levels and enhancing bilateral cooperation between the two federations.

Historically, Algeria and Spain have faced each other three times, with their last encounter dating back to the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, where Spain secured a 3-0 victory. This forthcoming potential friendly would mark a significant renewal of sporting ties between the two nations.

The Algerian national team is set to resume its activities in June, with two scheduled friendly matches: against Rwanda on June 5 in Constantine, and against Sweden on June 10 in Solna, near Stockholm. These fixtures are part of the team’s ongoing efforts to prepare and strengthen ahead of future competitive challenges.
