Algeria, FAO Deepen Strategic Cooperation for Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture

Algiers – October 2025 – In a step toward reinforcing Algeria’s agricultural diplomacy and sustainable development vision, Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, met on Saturday in Rome with Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), to examine avenues for deepening bilateral cooperation and developing joint programs aimed at achieving food security and sustainable agricultural growth.
Held on the sidelines of the World Food Forum, the meeting provided a platform for an in-depth exchange on Algeria’s strategic priorities in modernizing and expanding its agricultural sector. Both sides emphasized the need to develop innovative agricultural models tailored to arid and semi-arid regions, positioning Algeria as a regional hub for climate-smart Saharan agriculture.
Minister Oualid highlighted Algeria’s ongoing governmental efforts to modernize food storage systems, improve agricultural logistics, and enhance value chains — crucial steps in reducing food waste and consolidating national food security. He reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to advancing technology transfer and technical expertise-sharing programs, which play a vital role in improving agricultural productivity and fostering modern, sustainable farming practices.
A central theme of the discussions was the Green Dam Project, a large-scale reforestation and land restoration initiative launched by Algeria and supported by both the FAO and the Green Climate Fund. The two parties explored mechanisms to accelerate reforestation efforts, combat desertification and soil degradation, and strengthen Algeria’s resilience to climate change.
Minister Oualid expressed his appreciation for the FAO’s continued support, affirming Algeria’s determination to further enhance this strategic partnership in service of food security and sustainable development. “Algeria remains firmly committed to pursuing projects that integrate innovation, sustainability, and human development within its agricultural policy,” he emphasized.
For his part, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu praised Algeria’s remarkable progress in the agricultural sector and reaffirmed the organization’s readiness to provide technical and institutional assistance to help the country achieve its development objectives. He underscored that Algeria’s proactive engagement in international initiatives such as the World Food Forum demonstrates its firm commitment to global efforts toward sustainable food systems.
