ALGIERS- The Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy and Climate of the Federal Republic of Germany, Robert Habeck, expressed optimism regarding the promising future of cooperation between Algeria and Germany in the energy sector, particularly in the field of green hydrogen exploitation.

Following an audience with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the Presidential Palace in Algiers, Habeck stated to the press that he perceived “the wisdom of the President and his willingness to establish peace and reconciliation.” He highlighted that his visit aimed to explore means of strengthening cooperation in economic and energy sectors.

“After my meeting with the President, I am very optimistic about the future cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector,” said the Vice Chancellor, emphasizing that “economic cooperation in energy policy will greatly contribute to establishing peace and achieving prosperity.”

Acknowledging Germany’s import of hydrogen, particularly green hydrogen, Habeck praised “the enormous potential” of Algeria in this domain. He underscored that Algeria, Germany, and countries in between like Italy and Austria “could realize major projects to create a new energy world.”

Habeck thanked the Algerian government for increasing gas supplies at a time when Russian gas supplies were lacking, expressing Germany’s aspiration to significantly reduce gas consumption in the future.

He outlined Germany’s plans to establish new industrial stations nationwide over the next 15 to 25 years to replace natural gas with hydrogen, noting that low-carbon hydrogen would be produced using wind and solar energy.

The German official highlighted Algeria’s potential contribution to this project through “the existing gas pipeline crossing the Mediterranean, which can be readily utilized to create a mutually beneficial environment.” He emphasized that Algeria could prepare for the post-gas era to ensure future prosperity and wealth.
