Algeria Honors 145 Olive Oil Producers at First National OléoMed Awards

Algiers, Algeria | June 23rd, 2025 — In an event celebrating Algeria’s growing prominence in the global olive oil industry, 145 producers from 22 wilayas were honored during the inaugural edition of the OléoMed National Olive Oil Awards held Saturday in Algiers. Organized by the agricultural think tank Sipsa Filaha, the initiative aims to elevate standards and promote Algeria’s olive oil industry as a key pillar of national and export-oriented agricultural development.

The award ceremony, attended by prominent agricultural figures and stakeholders, paid tribute to the best olive growers and producers across the country. Winners received medals and official diplomas for their excellence in both quantity and quality, marking a renewed effort to encourage sustainable growth in the sector.

“The goal is to boost domestic production while maintaining the highest international standards,” said Arezki Outoudert, a member of the organizing committee. He emphasized that several Algerian olive oils have already won accolades on the international stage, a testament to the exceptional expertise and dedication of local producers.

Amine Ben Semmane, President of Sipsa Filaha, announced the creation of the Club OléoMed of Excellence, a platform designed to support elite producers in accessing foreign markets and participating in major international trade fairs. “The potential for export is enormous, and we are committed to accompanying our farmers every step of the way,” he said.

Former Agriculture Minister Rachid Benaïssa, also present at the ceremony, praised the sector’s strategic value. “With proper investment and support, Algeria’s olive-growing surface area could easily double, ensuring self-sufficiency and a strong surplus for export,” he affirmed.

Among the award-winning producers was Hakim Alilèche from Djelfa, who cultivates 40 hectares of certified organic olives. His oil, internationally certified, has already earned 49 medals from global competitions.

From Bou Saâda, Amer Koaka is continuing a family legacy over a vast 6,500-hectare estate in Oualtem. His “Chemlal” olive oil is exported to Europe and has been regularly recognized abroad.

In M’sila, Mustapha Saoudi demonstrated the promising potential of the Hauts Plateaux, with annual production reaching up to 35,000 liters in productive years.

From Blida, Noureddine Belout, owner of Larbaa Olive Farm, has been producing high-quality olive oil for 25 years. His products include conventional, organic, and flavored oils with lemon, rosemary, and thyme. Winner of 10 international medals, Belout remains committed to serving the Algerian market.

Organizers highlighted that Algeria now ranks among the world’s top ten olive oil producers, a remarkable achievement driven by government support policies including irrigation and fertilization subsidies. This growth is paving the way for Algerian olive oil to become a flagship product of national pride and international acclaim.
