On the 63rd Anniversary of Independence, Minister Ibrahim Merad Leads a Solemn Ceremony Celebrating a Pioneering Figure in National Security

Algiers, Algeria | July 5th, 2025 — In a moving tribute to one of Algeria’s historic figures in national security, the headquarters of the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) was officially renamed after the late moudjahid Ahmed Draya. The dedication ceremony was held on the morning of Saturday, July 5, 2025, as part of Algeria’s nationwide commemorations marking the 63rd anniversary of Independence Day and the restoration of national sovereignty.

The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of the Interior, Local Government, and Regional Planning, Mr. Brahim Merad, and attended by high-ranking officials including Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders Mr. Laïd Rebiga, DGSN Director General Mr. Ali Badaoui, Director General of Civil Protection, the Wali (Governor) of Algiers, retired officers of the National Police, families of fallen national security martyrs, and members of the media.

In his keynote address, Minister Merad emphasized the historic and institutional significance of the National Police, describing it as one of the oldest security organs of the post-independence Algerian state. He praised the sacrifices and professionalism of its members, who have consistently demonstrated competence and commitment in safeguarding citizens and property throughout Algeria’s modern history.

The minister highlighted the indelible contributions of the late moudjahid Ahmed Draya to the establishment and modernization of Algeria’s police force. Draya played a foundational role in shaping the State Security apparatus, initiating the creation of major training institutions such as the Higher Police School and the Applied National School of Security in Soumaa. Notably, he was also instrumental in integrating women into Algeria’s national security services—an achievement that symbolized progressive reform and inclusion.

Ahmed Draya is remembered not only as a revolutionary hero who fought valiantly during the War of National Liberation, but also as a visionary who devoted his post-independence life to building a modern, professional, and sovereign Algerian state. His legacy lives on in the institutions he helped found and the values he instilled within Algeria’s security establishment.

As part of the day’s events, the delegation also unveiled the Mural of Loyalty, a solemn memorial inscribed with the names of national duty martyrs at the DGSN headquarters. This mural, charged with historical symbolism, stands as an enduring testament to the sacrifices of those who gave their lives in defense of Algeria’s unity, safety, and sovereignty.
