Algeria Honors the National Day of the Mujahid: A Testament to Sacrifice, Unity, and Revolutionary Genius

Algiers, Algeria | This Wednesday, Algeria solemnly commemorates the National Day of the Mujahid, marking the dual anniversaries of the North Constantinois Offensive of August 20, 1955 and the Soummam Congress of August 20, 1956 — two historic milestones that defined the trajectory of the Algerian Revolution and affirmed the unbreakable bond between the people and the leaders of the National Liberation Army (ALN).

The North Constantinois Offensive, orchestrated by Zighoud Youcef and his comrades, shattered the illusion of French invincibility and proved to the colonial military that no amount of firepower could extinguish the will of a people united in the pursuit of freedom. It was not merely a military operation but a profound act of defiance that mobilized peasants and urban dwellers alike, striking police stations, gendarmerie posts, colonial infrastructure, and symbols of oppression.

The ferocity of France’s response, culminating in the barbaric massacre at the Skikda stadium, where thousands of Algerians were executed and thrown into mass graves, remains one of the darkest chapters of colonial violence. Yet even in tragedy, the offensive achieved a strategic breakthrough: by September 1955, the Algerian cause had been placed on the agenda of the United Nations General Assembly, recognized not as an internal disturbance but as a legitimate struggle for national liberation.

One year later, the Soummam Congress crystallized the Revolution’s vision. It provided structure, hierarchy, and clarity, transforming a movement of resistance into a disciplined force guided by political wisdom. Its charter institutionalized the primacy of the political over the military, emphasized the centrality of the internal struggle over external actors, and reorganized the revolutionary structure into six wilayas, each subdivided for greater cohesion. The Congress thus laid the foundations for an organized liberation movement capable of enduring the most brutal forms of repression.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, recalling these milestones, stressed that the Algerian people, bound by fidelity to the November 1954 Declaration, will continue to safeguard Algeria’s stability, security, and prosperity. His words echo the resilience of generations that refused to bow before tyranny, embodying the spirit of sacrifice that carried Algeria from chains to independence.

Today, the National Day of the Mujahid is not simply a ritual of remembrance. It is a reaffirmation that Algeria’s freedom was neither gifted nor negotiated but wrested through blood, sacrifice, and an indomitable unity. It is a call to future generations to uphold the values of November, to defend sovereignty with the same conviction as their forefathers, and to recognize that the price of dignity is eternal vigilance.
