ALGIERS- The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, has emphasized that the upcoming 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), scheduled from February 29 to March 2 in Algiers, aims to ensure the stability of global gas markets and address challenges related to the demand for this clean energy resource in the coming period.
In an interview with the Qatar News Agency (QNA), Minister Arkab stated that “common cooperation among producing countries will be among the main topics on the summit’s agenda.” He explained that discussions will focus on examining mechanisms for this cooperation to ensure global energy security.
Additionally, Minister Arkab stressed the importance of “securing supply and demand and serving the common interest through long-term commercial contracts, as well as strengthening joint efforts in investment and financing future projects.”
Adapting to the Global Shift towards Sustainable Resources
While highlighting the positive role of natural gas in energy transition, the Minister affirmed that one of the objectives of the Algiers Summit is to explore ways for producing countries to adapt to the global shift towards sustainable energy resources.
He emphasized the need to “protect global gas markets from any intervention or regulatory framework that could favor one party over another, which could harm the stability, balance, and security of the markets in the medium and long term.”
Contribution to the Success of Energy Transition
Minister Arkab described the summit as one “of great challenges” given the significant changes and crises at regional and international levels. He mentioned challenges such as the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, adaptation to the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate, and the increasing pressure to accelerate dialogue on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel use.
The Minister also highlighted the growing importance of natural gas in the global energy mix, underscoring the need for comprehensive discussions and support for cooperation among gas-exporting countries to contribute to the success of energy transition.
Strategic Importance of the Algiers Summit
The Minister emphasized that hosting the summit in Algiers is “an extremely important strategic event in the energy field,” as Algeria will work to strengthen partnerships between countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote its role in sustainable energy solutions for the future.
He noted the increasing number of natural gas-producing countries seeking to join the forum as observers or full members, indicating their desire to benefit from the opportunities and advantages the forum offers its members.
Regarding preparations for the Algiers Summit, Minister Arkab assured that all necessary means and conditions have been mobilized to host delegations, organizations, and official bodies, anticipating the success of this session at all levels.
