Namibian Ambassador Salutes Algeria’s Unwavering Commitment to African Liberation and Global Advocacy as Angola’s President Calls for a New Era of Collective African Renaissance

Algiers, Algeria | May 27th, 2025 —  In a momentous celebration of African unity and resilience, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, in coordination with the Department of African Affairs, hosted an official ceremony on Monday in Algiers to mark Africa Day, observed annually on May 25. This year’s commemoration coincided with the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU).

Held at the Ministry’s headquarters, the event served not only as a celebration of historical achievements but as a call to action for deeper solidarity, institutional sovereignty, and justice for African peoples.

Namibia’s Ambassador: “Algeria is a Beacon of Resistance and Continental Leadership”

Speaking on behalf of the African diplomatic corps in Algiers, Namibian Ambassador Panduleni Kaino Shingenge, Dean of the African diplomatic community in Algeria, delivered a compelling address praising Algeria’s indispensable role on the international stage, particularly at the United Nations Security Council, where the country has consistently advocated for peace, stability, and the rights of oppressed peoples across the globe.

“Algeria stands as a beacon of resistance and leadership,” declared Ambassador Shingenge, commending the North African nation for its principled diplomacy, mediation efforts, and commitment to women’s empowerment—qualities that, she affirmed, “embody the core values of African unity.”

She also extended heartfelt congratulations to Algeria on its recent election as Vice-President of the African Union Commission, emphasizing that this prestigious post is a “reflection of Algeria’s dedication to the shared African vision of sovereignty, solidarity, and sustainable development.”

Advancing a Just and Sovereign Africa

Ambassador Shingenge underscored that as Algeria assumes this vital, forward-looking role, its institutional expertise and resolute engagement will be instrumental in propelling the continent forward toward justice, prosperity, and enduring peace.

In her stirring message, she urged Africans across the continent and diaspora to recommit to the principles of justice and dignity, particularly for those still denied fundamental rights. “Together, we shall build a strong, sovereign, united, and respected Africa,” she proclaimed, reminding the international community of its moral responsibility to address long-standing injustices that continue to hinder Africa’s full emergence.

Despite the strides made since independence, she reminded attendees that the struggle for complete liberation remains unfinished. “Western Sahara’s ongoing quest for self-determination stands as a stark reminder that the path toward African justice is far from over,” she asserted.

Calling for massive investments in African youth, she stressed the importance of empowering young people not only economically but also through access to quality education, entrepreneurship opportunities, and inclusive development. “Only then,” she added, “can they rise to lead an Africa that is fully self-sufficient and future-ready.”

Joao Lourenço: “Let This Day Mark the Dawn of a New African Era”

In a pre-recorded video message broadcast during the event, President of Angola and current Chair of the African Union, Joao Lourenço, reaffirmed the AU’s unwavering efforts to promote democratic governance, sustainable economic development, peace, and security across the continent.

“These collective efforts reflect the shared aspirations of all African citizens,” said President Lourenço, adding that such ambitions demand a daily commitment from African leaders and institutions. He called on all stakeholders to rally around a transformative vision: “Building an Africa anchored in values, driven by achievements, and inspired by historical victories.”

The Angolan leader also stressed the importance of a strong, united, and sovereign Africa, capable of speaking with one voice on the global stage. He described the struggle for Africa’s political liberation as a compass for current and future generations amid modern challenges, including internal conflicts and lingering structural injustices.

President Lourenço concluded with a resounding call for Africa Day to serve not merely as an annual commemoration but as a launchpad for a new continental era, rooted in collective hope and shared construction. He invited all Africans to reflect on the AU’s theme for the year: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent: Addressing the Question of Reparations.”

Honoring Algeria’s Legacy in Liberation Movements

The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Minister of Culture and the Arts, Zouhir Ballalou, and State Secretary for African Affairs, Bakhta Selma Mansouri, alongside numerous ambassadors and members of the African diplomatic corps accredited in Algeria.

The gathering featured the screening of a documentary on Africa Day and an evocative photo exhibition entitled “Algeria’s Role in Supporting Liberation Movements in Africa”. The exhibit highlighted Algeria’s historic solidarity with decolonization struggles and its enduring position as a pillar of African freedom and unity.
