Algeria, Hungary Reignite Strategic Partnership: Alger-Budapest Air Route Set for Reopening
Algiers – December 2025 – Algeria and Hungary have reaffirmed their commitment to revitalizing their strategic partnership during the fourth session of the Algeria-Hungary Joint Commission on Economic, Technical, and Scientific Cooperation, held in Algiers last Thursday. The session, co-chaired by Algeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, and Hungary’s Deputy Minister of Defense, Tamas Vargha, brought together representatives from key ministries of both nations to explore concrete avenues for deepening bilateral cooperation.
A focal point of the discussions was the anticipated reopening of the direct air route between Algiers and Budapest, a measure expected to enhance mobility, economic exchanges, and tourism between the two countries. Minister Oualid emphasized that while Algeria-Hungary relations are evolving positively—highlighted by a marked increase in trade and multiple initiatives across various sectors—the existing level of cooperation still falls short of the full potential of the historical and longstanding ties between the two nations.
Reflecting on Hungary’s early support for Algeria following its independence in 1962, Oualid stressed that the technical expertise and training provided by Budapest laid a robust foundation for renewed cooperation. During the session, a broad range of sectors were examined, including agriculture, forestry, aquaculture, industry, start-ups, professional training, and higher education. Opportunities for Hungarian investment in Algeria were highlighted, with the minister noting that Algeria’s investment law and associated incentives make the country “more open than ever” to foreign investors.
Energy cooperation, particularly in renewable and alternative sources, was also underscored as a priority. Algeria, a key European partner, seeks to leverage Hungarian expertise in energy transition to strengthen its domestic energy sector. Both parties agreed on promoting tourism, intensifying trade exchanges, and fostering a renewed dynamic in the exchange of expertise to elevate bilateral cooperation to a level befitting their shared history and mutual interests.
Deputy Minister Vargha lauded the enduring partnership, describing it as forward-looking, mutually beneficial, and rooted in trust and sincere friendship. He highlighted that while bilateral trade surpassed $70 million in 2024, the first nine months of 2025 saw a 20% increase, underscoring the untapped potential of this relationship. Vargha emphasized that the Algeria-Hungary Economic Forum, held alongside the session, represents a pivotal mechanism for boosting business cooperation and generating new investment opportunities.
Both ministers concluded the session expressing their determination to expand cooperation across sectors, strengthen economic ties, and solidify the strategic partnership between Algiers and Budapest, building on decades of historical collaboration and mutual respect.
