Algiers – October 2025 – In a step consolidating its role as a responsible regional actor, Algeria has formally launched a strategic partnership with the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), aimed at reinforcing institutional capacities and fostering a human-rights-based approach to migration governance.
The initiative was officially inaugurated on Wednesday in Algiers by the Minister of Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, who described the project as “a vital link in the chain of constructive cooperation uniting Algerian authorities, the ICMPD, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.”
The launch ceremony brought together high-level representatives, including ICMPD Director-General Michael Spindelegger, Rachid Medah, Director General of Consular Affairs and the National Community Abroad at Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Victor Cramer, Deputy Director General for International Migration at the Netherlands Ministry of Asylum and Migration, Hendrick Krauskopf, Deputy Director at the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration, as well as Denmark’s Ambassador to Algeria, Katrine From Hoyer.
Algeria’s Humanitarian Approach Anchored in Human Rights
In his address, Minister Sayoud underlined Algeria’s firm commitment to international cooperation through its ratification of multiple conventions and treaties, particularly those related to the protection of human rights and the dignity of migrants. He emphasized that the country’s policies are guided not only by the safeguarding of national interests, but also by the cultivation of constructive and respectful relations with neighboring states.
“Algeria has never neglected the humanitarian dimension in addressing migration,” Sayoud stressed. “We have adopted concrete measures rooted in the principles of human rights, mobilizing substantial human, financial, and material resources to ensure the care and dignity of migrants in irregular situations.”
The Minister further highlighted that cooperation and coordination remain the most effective path to confronting shared challenges, reiterating Algeria’s readiness to contribute to international efforts designed to balance security, stability, and humanitarian imperatives.
