Algeria Inaugurates “Tafadis” Sugar Refinery: A Strategic Boost for National Food Security

Industry Minister Sifi Ghrieb, alongside Madar Holding CEO Charaf-Eddine Amara, inaugurates a high-capacity refinery in Larbaâ, marking a key milestone in Algeria’s drive for industrial sovereignty and food independence.

Algiers, Algeria | May 15th, 2025 — In a significant step toward achieving food security and enhancing industrial output, Algeria officially inaugurated the Tafadis Sugar Refinery today in the Larbatache industrial zone, Boumerdès province. The ceremony was presided over by Minister of Industry Sifi Ghrieb, Boumerdès Governor Fouzia Naâma, and Charaf-Eddine Amara, CEO of Madar Holding—the parent company behind this ambitious investment.

Speaking at the ceremony, Charaf-Eddine Amara hailed the project as a historic turning point in the journey of Madar Holding, underlining its strategic role in supporting Algeria’s national economy. “This plant is a concrete embodiment of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision to stimulate domestic investment and ensure food sovereignty,” Amara affirmed.

He further emphasized that the refinery is the outcome of a strategic vision focused on leveraging national capacities and encouraging investment in critical sectors, adding, “All teams and executives within Madar Holding remain fully committed to applying international standards and best practices across all operational stages.”

The newly inaugurated Tafadis refinery boasts a daily production capacity of 2,000 tons, representing a major contribution to the country’s sugar needs while also reducing dependence on imports. Beyond its production output, the project is expected to create a substantial number of direct and indirect jobs, injecting vitality into the regional economy of Boumerdès and surrounding areas.

Amara stressed that Tafadis is more than an industrial complex; it is a symbol of Algeria’s industrial ambition and a key pillar in the national effort to localize essential food production, in line with government policies encouraging value-added industry and private sector engagement.

The launch of Tafadis comes at a time when Algeria is actively pushing for a self-reliant and diversified economy, with food processing and agro-industrial transformation topping the national agenda.
