Algeria, India Consolidate Military Cooperation: General Saïd Chanegriha Hosts Indian Army Chief of Staff

Algiers, Algeria | Algeria reaffirmed its strategic partnership with India on Thursday as General of the Army Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP), received General of the Army Dwivedi Upendra, Chief of Staff of the Indian Land Forces, at the ANP headquarters in Algiers. The meeting crowned an official working visit to Algeria by the Indian military delegation.
According to the Ministry of National Defence, the talks brought together senior Algerian and Indian officers and centered on strengthening bilateral military cooperation, enhancing security coordination, and exchanging perspectives on pressing global and regional security challenges.
In his address, General Chanegriha extended a warm welcome to the Indian delegation, voicing his satisfaction with the “positive trajectory of Algerian-Indian relations,” particularly following the October 2024 visit of Indian President Droupadi Murmu to Algiers and her meeting with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. That state visit, he noted, opened “new horizons” for bilateral cooperation and laid the foundations for future strategic engagement across multiple sectors, including defence.
The Algerian Army Chief stressed that the renewed dynamism has already borne fruit, citing reciprocal high-level visits, including the participation of General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff of the Indian Armed Forces, in the celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the Algerian Revolution, as well as Chanegriha’s own visit to India earlier this year.
For his part, General Dwivedi Upendra expressed his appreciation for the visit to Algeria, highlighting “the great opportunities available to both sides to build a beneficial and fruitful military cooperation.” He praised the exchanges with ANP commanders as well as the opportunity to address common security concerns on both the regional and international fronts.
The visit also included extensive working sessions covering defence industry and training, with meetings held at the Algerian Land Forces Command, the Central Directorate of Military Fabrications, and the Bureau of Military Education. The Indian delegation further toured the prestigious Cherchell Military Academy “President Houari Boumediene,” as well as the Army Command and Staff School, gaining first-hand insight into Algeria’s advanced training structures.
Cultural and historical visits complemented the official program, offering the Indian delegation the opportunity to discover Algeria’s rich heritage. The visit concluded with an exchange of symbolic gifts, a gesture underscoring the spirit of friendship and mutual respect that anchors Algerian-Indian relations.
