Algeria, India Strengthen Strategic Cooperation in the Mining Sector

Algiers – November 2025 – Algeria and India are taking decisive steps to elevate their partnership in the mining sector, paving the way for enhanced cooperation, investment, and technological exchange in one of the most strategically vital domains of their bilateral relations.
On Monday, the Secretary of State to the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, in charge of Mines, Karima Bakir Tafer, received at the Ministry’s headquarters Mrs. Swati Vijay Kulkarni, Ambassador of the Republic of India to Algeria, for a high-level meeting dedicated to exploring new prospects of collaboration in the mining industry.
According to a statement released by the Ministry, the meeting—attended by senior officials from the department—served as an opportunity to exchange views on mechanisms to bolster bilateral cooperation, identify potential areas of joint investment, and advance partnership initiatives within the framework of Algeria’s new strategic orientation toward sustainable development and industrial diversification.
Discussions focused on key areas such as phosphate and potash exploitation, as well as modern fertilizer transformation technologies, particularly India’s cutting-edge “nano-urea” technology—a globally recognized innovation contributing to sustainable agriculture and the efficient use of natural resources. This technology represents a crucial advancement in reducing environmental impact while maximizing crop productivity, aligning closely with Algeria’s national objectives for responsible resource management.
Reaffirming Algeria’s strategic vision, Secretary of State Karima Bakir Tafer underscored her country’s determination to expand cooperation with India across high-value-added mining segments, notably in the local processing of mineral resources, including iron ore transformation. She emphasized that such collaboration is consistent with Algeria’s national strategy aimed at promoting the valorization of raw materials and fostering industrial sovereignty through technology transfer and domestic processing.
For her part, Ambassador Swati Vijay Kulkarni expressed the keen interest of Indian enterprises in investing in Algeria, particularly in light of the new legal frameworks governing hydrocarbons, mining, and investment. These reforms, she noted, have significantly enhanced Algeria’s attractiveness to foreign investors by offering greater transparency, improved regulatory conditions, and a favorable business climate.
Both sides agreed to intensify coordination and technical exchanges through reciprocal visits, capacity-building initiatives, and targeted cooperation programs, with the shared objective of materializing concrete and mutually beneficial projects in the upcoming phase.
