Algeria-India: Two Exemplary Models Inspiring Nations in the Struggle for Freedom and Sovereignty

Algiers – October 2025 – Participants in the conference titled “Algeria-India: History of Struggle and Constructive Future,” held on Thursday in Algiers, highlighted the enduring and robust partnership between Algeria and India, positioning both nations as exemplary models for peoples striving for freedom and national sovereignty.
Addressing attendees at the event organized by the National Museum of the Mujahid, coinciding with the 156th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth, Hassan Maghdouri, Director of the museum, emphasized that “Algeria and India have consistently served as inspiring models for global nations in their fight against colonial oppression and their pursuit of sovereignty.” He noted that the conference aims not only to preserve historical memory but also to establish a bridge connecting the shared past with a forward-looking vision of cooperation.
Maghdouri underscored the common experiences of Algeria and India in resisting colonialism, referencing iconic figures such as Emir Abdelkader and Mahatma Gandhi, whose legacies epitomize justice, human dignity, and nonviolent struggle. “Our bilateral relations extend beyond historical solidarity to encompass political, economic, cultural, and technological partnerships, offering new avenues to strengthen our cooperation and to play a pivotal role in promoting a fairer and more balanced world,” he affirmed.
Ambassador of India to Algeria, Swati Vijay Kulkarni, lauded Gandhi’s principles, describing the anniversary as “a unique and significant occasion for the Indian people,” and commended Algeria’s recognition of Gandhi through the naming of a street in Algiers—a symbolic gesture reflecting the nation’s adherence to his values of peaceful resistance and universal justice. She reiterated India’s commitment to reinforcing friendship and cooperation with Algeria, stressing the shared ambition of translating their historical and cultural ties into tangible, forward-looking achievements.
The conference featured a joint exhibition of photographs and historical documents, alongside a documentary film tracing key milestones in Algeria-India relations. Additionally, seminars were conducted on “The Spiritual Dimensions of the Struggle for Independence: From Emir Abdelkader to Mahatma Gandhi,” reinforcing the shared ethos and moral foundations that continue to underpin cooperation between the two nations.
