Algeria, Indonesia Forge Stronger Ties in Hydrocarbons and Mining Sectors

Algiers – October 2025 – In a step to deepen bilateral economic engagement, Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, received on Monday the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Algeria, Chalief Akbar Tjandraningrat, to discuss avenues for enhancing cooperation in the hydrocarbons and mining sectors. The meeting underscores the growing interest of Indonesian enterprises in investing in Algeria, particularly in energy and mineral resources, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines.
Held at the ministry’s headquarters in the presence of Secretary of State for Mines, Karima Bakir Tafer, the Director General of Pertamina Algeria, and senior officials from both nations, the talks focused on strengthening Algerian-Indonesian partnerships in exploration, production, and commercialization of hydrocarbons and mineral resources. Discussions also highlighted opportunities to enhance collaboration between Algeria’s Sonatrach and Indonesia’s Pertamina, aiming to optimize production efficiency, technology transfer, and crude oil marketing.
The meeting additionally examined investment plans from Pupuk Indonesia, a leading chemical and fertilizer company, which expressed strong interest in joint projects in Algeria’s phosphate and gas sectors. These initiatives are expected to bolster local production, create added value, and promote sustainable industrial growth.
Both sides explored further collaboration in the mining domain, particularly in the extraction, processing, and commercialization of phosphate, as well as in the exploration of strategic minerals such as lithium. Emphasis was also placed on developing supply chains, sustainable production of critical raw materials and rare metals, and the exchange of technical expertise in hydrocarbons and mining operations.
Minister Arkab reiterated Algeria’s commitment to building balanced and mutually beneficial strategic partnerships, founded on technology transfer, resource valorization, and sustainable industrial development. He also acknowledged Indonesia’s expertise in the development of processing industries linked to hydrocarbons and mining, considering it a model for Algerian industrial advancement.
Ambassador Tjandraningrat, for his part, expressed Indonesia’s appreciation for the opportunities presented in Algeria and reaffirmed his country’s determination to expand its economic presence in Africa through high-quality partnerships, citing Algeria as a reliable partner due to its stability, abundant natural resources, and investment-friendly legal framework.
