Algiers, Algeria– Friday, July 18, 2025 | In a move underscoring a deepening bilateral engagement in human rights advocacy, Abdelmadjid Zaalani, President of Algeria’s National Council for Human Rights (CNDH), received the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Reza Babai, at the Council’s headquarters in Algiers. The meeting, held on Thursday, served as a platform for both parties to reaffirm their commitment to the principles of human dignity, institutional independence, and the urgent need to challenge global double standards in the application of international human rights law.

According to an official communiqué released Friday, the encounter facilitated a comprehensive review of the two nations’ respective experiences in promoting and safeguarding human rights. It marked a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in an international climate marred by selective interpretations and geopolitical instrumentalization of human rights discourse.

Zaalani reiterated the foundational principles underpinning the CNDH’s operations, asserting, “The Council is reflective of Algeria’s societal diversity and committed to the principle of gender parity. It functions with full independence and impartiality in identifying rights violations and in formulating its recommendations.” His remarks emphasized the institution’s autonomous character and its ethical imperative to remain free from political influence, both domestic and foreign.

Touching upon the broader international context, Zaalani expressed concern over the erosion of universal human rights norms, particularly in zones of conflict. “Human rights must be preserved and guaranteed, regardless of the context—even amidst war,” he stated. He further noted that while the Universal Declaration of Human Rights—adopted in the aftermath of World War II—was conceived to prevent the recurrence of atrocities, today’s global environment is plagued by inconsistencies and ambiguities in the enforcement of these standards.

“There is an evident imbalance, and a troubling double standard in the application of human rights norms. In many ongoing conflicts, human rights are being sidelined or altogether ignored,” he warned, pointing to what he described as the marginalization of foundational ethical frameworks in international affairs.

For his part, Ambassador Mohammad Reza Babai praised Algeria’s institutional transparency and methodological rigor in monitoring and reporting human rights conditions. He expressed particular interest in the CNDH’s comprehensive annual reports, submitted directly to the President of the Republic, as well as its thematic publications and public outreach materials. “We highly value Algeria’s experience, especially the clarity of its mechanisms for evaluation and institutional independence,” he affirmed.

The Iranian diplomat provided a detailed overview of Iran’s own human rights structure, highlighting its internal composition and operational logic, while voicing support for enhanced institutional dialogue between the two countries.

In an emotionally charged intervention, Ambassador Babai referenced the devastating humanitarian toll in Gaza, deploring the apparent collapse of international accountability. “The martyrdom of Gaza’s children has stripped the concept of human rights of its moral essence,” he declared. “Diplomacy itself is bleeding—its conscience battered by global indifference.”

Concluding their exchange, both parties underscored the urgent necessity of forging structured and strategic cooperation between Algeria’s CNDH and Iran’s Office of Human Rights. They emphasized that such collaboration would not only allow for the mutual exchange of expertise and operational models but would also help fortify a multipolar vision of human rights rooted in justice, sovereignty, and cultural integrity.
