Algeria, Italy Deepen Civil Protection Ties: A Strategic Step Toward Joint Risk Management

Algiers, Algeria | June 24th, 2025 — In a significant display of bilateral solidarity and strategic foresight, the Director General of Algeria’s Civil Protection, Colonel Boualem Boughelaf, received on Tuesday a high-ranking delegation from Italy’s National Corps of Firefighters, led by its Director General, Eros Mannino. The meeting, held at the headquarters of the National Unit for Training and Intervention in Algiers, marked a pivotal step forward in Algerian-Italian cooperation on civil protection and emergency response.

During the session, Colonel Boughelaf delivered a comprehensive presentation on the current state of cooperation between the two countries, highlighting both bilateral and multilateral frameworks that have shaped previous initiatives. He placed particular emphasis on training, prevention, mutual assistance in emergencies, and the deployment of advanced technologies in disaster response—domains in which Algeria is seeking closer collaboration with its Italian counterpart.

Acknowledging Italy’s extensive expertise in forest fire combat and the advanced capabilities of its civil protection training institutions, Colonel Boughelaf stressed Algeria’s determination to deepen this partnership. He proposed the intensification of joint training programs, structured exchange of expertise, and the establishment of a twinning initiative between Algerian and Italian civil protection schools. These moves, he noted, would serve not only operational readiness but also long-term resilience in the face of natural and technological disasters.

Eros Mannino, for his part, underscored the significance of the delegation’s visit, expressing his strong desire to build a “solid technical dialogue” and to launch concrete, sustainable collaboration between the two institutions. “We aim to create a strong foundation for partnership—one that supports reciprocal training, capacity building, and operational exchange to strengthen our mutual preparedness,” he stated.

The Italian delegation was also briefed on Algeria’s civil protection operational structure and observed a detailed presentation at the National Unit’s headquarters. Both sides engaged in peer-to-peer exchanges on field strategies and techniques for managing complex emergency scenarios.

In addition, the visitors toured the National Operational Coordination Center to gain first-hand insight into Algeria’s digital platforms used for emergency management and monitoring. The demonstration served as a springboard for exploring potential areas of technical alignment and digital transformation in civil protection.

This official visit—taking place from June 23 to 25—is part of a broader framework to reinforce Algerian-Italian cooperation in civil protection, particularly in the management of major natural, industrial, and technological hazards. The shared commitment to strengthening technical dialogue, prevention mechanisms, and joint disaster management protocols is a testament to the evolving strategic partnership between the two Mediterranean nations.
