Algeria Joins ASEAN’s Treaty of Amity and Cooperation: A Strategic Shift Towards Multilateral Integration

Kuala Lumpur, July 10, 2025 — Algeria has officially joined the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in a landmark move that marks a new chapter in the country’s foreign policy and diplomatic reach. The signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, currently held in Malaysia.

Representing Algeria, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf signed the treaty, describing the occasion as both a “great honour” and “a profound source of pride” for his country. In his speech, Attaf conveyed Algeria’s “deep gratitude to the Malaysian government” for hosting the ceremony and expressed appreciation to all ASEAN member states for their support and positive reception of Algeria’s membership request.

“This is not merely a ceremonial signature,” Attaf declared. “It is a deliberate, strategic alignment with a family of nations that exemplifies unity, cooperation, and regional prosperity. ASEAN is not only a regional bloc but a model of integration and collective progress that continues to inspire the world—especially Africa.”

He emphasized that Algeria’s decision to join the TAC was motivated by three key considerations:

First, Algeria’s admiration for ASEAN’s success in translating regional cooperation into economic transformation, stability, and shared prosperity. Minister Attaf called ASEAN “an exceptional example of regional integration,” noting its tangible results in uplifting its member states.

Second, the move reflects Algeria’s strong desire to deepen its longstanding bilateral relations with ASEAN countries. “Today’s accession adds a new dimension to these ties,” said Attaf, highlighting Algeria’s intention to engage ASEAN not just bilaterally, but as a unified and influential global bloc.

Third, Algeria’s vision includes initiating a sectoral partnership dialogue with ASEAN, a proposal for which Attaf sought the support of member states. He stressed that Algeria’s foreign policy is increasingly geared toward multipolar cooperation, and that joining ASEAN’s TAC aligns with its broader efforts to diversify alliances and promote South-South solidarity.

Attaf concluded by reaffirming Algeria’s commitment to uphold the values and principles enshrined in the TAC, and to contribute meaningfully to ASEAN’s mission of peace, development, and multilateral diplomacy.

With this accession, Algeria becomes one of the few African nations to formally join the ASEAN Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, underscoring its growing engagement in global diplomacy and its aspiration to be a bridge between Africa and Asia.
