Algeria, Kuwait Forge a New Partnership to Drive Green Hydrogen Projects

Algiers, Algeria | Algeria has taken a decisive step in consolidating its role as a future energy hub, as Minister of State for Energy, Mining, and Renewable Energies Mohamed Arkab hosted Sheikh Mishaal Al-Jarrah Al-Sabah, Chairman of Kuwait’s Metro Holding, at the Ministry headquarters. The high-level meeting was also attended by State Secretary for Renewable Energies, Noureddine Yassa, and Sonatrach CEO, Rachid Hachichi.
Sheikh Mishaal presented an ambitious investment project centered on harnessing Algeria’s abundant solar and wind resources to produce green hydrogen for global export. The proposal includes technology transfer, local industrial integration—particularly in electrolyzer manufacturing—and the development of national expertise, ensuring that Algeria captures maximum added value.
Both sides agreed to establish technical working groups to define a clear roadmap for the project’s implementation.
Algeria’s Hydrogen Vision
Minister Arkab reaffirmed that Algeria possesses all the necessary assets—its strategic geographical position, diversified energy resources, and robust infrastructure—to emerge as a regional leader in green hydrogen production and export. He highlighted the recently launched “Southern Hydrogen Corridor”, linking Algeria to Europe, which was endorsed in Rome earlier this year as a cornerstone of Euro-Mediterranean energy integration.
Arkab also stressed that economic reforms and Algeria’s new investment law have created a competitive and transparent environment, designed to attract long-term strategic partners—placing Kuwaiti investors at the forefront of this opportunity.
