Algiers – September 2025 – In a development bound to reverberate across the footballing world, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has delivered a major blow to its French counterpart by officially securing the services of goalkeeper Luca Zidane, son of the legendary Zinedine Zidane.
The 27-year-old shot-stopper, a product of Real Madrid’s famed Castilla academy and currently guarding the posts for Spanish side Granada in the Segunda División, has formally switched his sporting nationality and committed to representing the Algerian national team. The announcement marks a pivotal victory for Algeria’s football diplomacy and a striking setback for France, whose federation had long considered the keeper as part of its future plans.
Despite France’s pursuit, the FAF, under the leadership of President Walid Sadi, succeeded in convincing Zidane to embrace his Algerian roots and don the colors of the Desert Warriors. His debut with the national side is expected during the upcoming FIFA international break in November, ushering in a new era for Algeria’s goalkeeping department.
Luca Zidane’s career trajectory reflects both pedigree and perseverance. Having featured for clubs such as Racing Santander, Rayo Vallecano, and Eibar, alongside his tenure at Real Madrid, the keeper also represented France at all youth levels, further underscoring the significance of Algeria’s triumph in securing his allegiance.
This season, Zidane has appeared in four matches for Granada, conceding ten goals in Spain’s fiercely competitive second division. While his club currently sits at the bottom of the table, his individual talent and international experience remain undeniable assets.
