Algeria Launches Digital Zakat Payment

First Electronic Zakat Payments Made via “Baridi Mob” and POS Terminals as Ministry Embarks on 24th Awareness Campaign

Algiers, Algeria | July 8th, 2025 — In a move toward digital transformation and social solidarity, Algeria has officially launched its first electronic zakat payment operations through the “Baridi Mob” mobile application and Point of Sale (POS) terminals. The initiative was announced Tuesday in Algiers during the opening of the 24th national awareness campaign for the Zakat Fund, overseen by the Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Youcef Belmehdi.

The event, themed “The Role of the Zakat Fund in Strengthening Social Cohesion: From the Jurisprudence of Giving to the Impact of Action,” was held via video conference and marked a major milestone in the government’s push to digitize public services in line with directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Zakat Goes Digital: Efficiency, Transparency, and Inclusivity

Speaking during the seminar, Minister Belmehdi emphasized that the launch of the first two electronic zakat transactions aligns with the broader national strategy of digital governance. The adoption of digital payment tools—through Baridi Mob and electronic terminals—is expected to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles and ensure faster, more secure, and more transparent zakat transfers, ultimately amplifying their societal impact.

“Zakat is a powerful tool for achieving social justice and solidarity,” stated the Minister. “By digitalizing the collection and disbursement process, we enhance operational efficiency and widen the reach of this vital religious and social institution.”

In a significant regulatory development, Belmehdi announced that all electronic zakat payments—whether from the donor or to the beneficiary—will be fully exempt from taxes, under a formal agreement between the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.

The 24th awareness campaign for the Zakat Fund is being launched under the slogan “Your Zakat… Purifies Your Wealth and Supports Your Brothers.” The Ministry has pledged to intensify outreach efforts across mosques, media platforms, and social networks to maximize public engagement.

According to Minister Belmehdi, the previous campaign yielded over 930 million dinars (93 billion centimes), providing direct support to more than 100,000 vulnerable families—an unprecedented figure demonstrating the trust and participation of Algerian citizens.

New Payment Infrastructure Enhances Accessibility

On the sidelines of the event, Mohamed Bouziane, Director General of the National Office for Endowments and Zakat, officially unveiled the new digital payment infrastructure. Zakat can now be paid using electronic cards via POS terminals, the Baridi Mob app through its QR payment feature, or through the Office’s dedicated website, providing maximum accessibility and convenience to users nationwide.
