Algeria Launches First Digital Blood Donor Platform to Strengthen National Lifeline

Algiers, Algeria | June 14th, 2025 — In an initiative that marks a turning point in Algeria’s healthcare solidarity efforts, the National Observatory of Civil Society (ONSC) officially launched on Saturday a nationwide digital platform for blood donors. This cutting-edge system aims to centralize and organize blood donation efforts, ensuring continuous availability of vital blood platelets for patients across the country—especially those battling cancer.

Facilitating Emergency Coordination Across Wilayas

Through this new digital platform, hospitals across Algeria will now have direct and immediate access to donor profiles—a game-changer in medical emergencies where time is critical. The platform is designed to register essential personal data of voluntary donors, allowing for better coordination between healthcare providers and the public, particularly during urgent needs for rare blood types or platelet transfusions.

“Numerous initiatives exist, but there is a lack of structured donor participation,” said Ibtissem Hamlaoui, President of the ONSC, during the launch event in Algiers. “This platform aims to professionalize and institutionalize the noble act of giving blood, transforming spontaneous gestures into a permanent wave of national solidarity.”

Hamlaoui highlighted that particular focus has been placed on wilayas hosting cancer treatment centers, where demand for blood platelets is critical—especially for children undergoing chemotherapy.

A National Campaign for Blood, Hope, and Life

Coinciding with World Blood Donor Day, observed annually on June 14, a national awareness campaign was launched under the slogan: “Give your blood, offer hope—together, through our blood, we save lives.” The launch ceremony was held at Place 1er Mai in Algiers and featured collaboration between the ONSC and the Algerian Red Crescent (CRA).

Speaking at the event, Lahcen Birech, a resident physician in hematology and member of the CRA, emphasized the life-saving power of donation. “One single blood donation can save up to three lives. It’s a small gesture that has a profound impact. Whether it’s a child with cancer, a patient in surgery, or someone injured in an accident—every drop counts,” he declared.

A Symbol of Active Solidarity

Echoing his sentiment, Amira Bendi, Vice-President of the Scientific Association of Pharmacy Students at the University of Algiers (ASEPA), underscored that blood donation is not only an act of kindness, but a necessity. “It’s a life-saving habit. Blood banks are in constant need, and every contribution strengthens our public health capacity,” she stated.

Among the donors present, Wahiba, seated calmly while donating blood, shared her feelings: “I feel like I’m doing something meaningful. You may not know who you’re helping—but you know you’re saving someone’s life. This is how I show solidarity with the sick.”
