Algeria Launches First Nuclear Decontamination Operations on French Test Sites

𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓕𝓮𝓫𝓻𝓾𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – Algeria has commenced its first-ever operations to decontaminate sites of French nuclear tests in the southern part of the country, decades after France conducted atmospheric and underground nuclear explosions in pursuit of global nuclear power status. These tests, carried out between 1960 and 1966, left behind massive radioactive contamination, causing enduring health crises among local populations, including cancers, congenital malformations, genetic disorders, endocrine dysfunctions, and widespread infertility.

This year marks the 66th anniversary of the first French nuclear detonation in Reggane, Adrar Province, known as Operation Gerboise Bleue on 13 February 1960. Algeria commemorates these events as crimes against humanity, remaining imprescriptible and emblematic of historical injustices that France has persistently denied, refusing to release technical data, site maps, and archival documents concerning radioactive waste disposal.

The Algerian government has enshrined the memory of these crimes in law, criminalizing French colonial actions and affirming that historical crimes demand recognition and reparation. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has repeatedly underscored that memory is a sovereign, non-negotiable matter, while Algerian jurists and experts continue to document evidence proving that the nuclear tests affected vast numbers of civilians, directly contradicting French claims of limited impact.

Despite France’s ongoing reluctance to acknowledge its historical, legal, and moral responsibility, Algeria remains determined to ensure the truth about these atrocities reaches future generations. The bombs dropped at Reggane, with an estimated yield of 70,000 tons of TNT, exceeded the cumulative power of all prior nuclear tests conducted globally at that time, leaving irreversible environmental and human damage.

In response to decades of inaction, Algeria launched its inaugural decontamination operation at In Ekker, Tamanrasset, relying entirely on national expertise, technology, and personnel. According to the documentary “Les Algériens au cœur des défis” produced by the Ministry of National Defense, this initiative reflects decades of planning and inter-ministerial coordination, marking the country’s commitment to restoring contaminated sites and mitigating ongoing health risks.

The In Ekker region was the site of one of the most dangerous failed nuclear detonations, with an estimated yield of 150,000 tons of TNT. The environmental and health consequences remain severe, and although a 2010 compensation law exists, Algerians affected by the tests have received minimal redress. According to the official APS news agency in 2012, at least 30,000 Algerians fell ill due to the 1962 tests, and children continue to be born with disabilities linked to radioactive pollution.

President Tebboune has consistently demanded that France assume responsibility, declaring, “Do not give us money; clean the sites you contaminated.” The launch of the national decontamination campaign demonstrates Algeria’s determination to confront historical injustices, preserve the memory of its people, and assert sovereignty over its territory and environment.

The operation marks a historic moment in Algeria’s struggle for justice and represents a symbolic rebuke to France’s continued evasion. It underscores that while France may delay accountability, it cannot erase the profound human and ecological consequences of its nuclear program in Algeria.
