The inauguration was marked by the reception of the first passenger train from Tindouf and the ceremonial arrival of the inaugural cargo train transporting iron ore from the Gara Djebilet mine to Oran.
President Tebboune paid tribute to the workforce of the National Railway Transport Company (SNTF) and all contributors to this monumental project, emphasizing its strategic significance for regional integration, national economic diversification, and technological advancement. Engaging directly with passengers aboard the first train, the President underscored the transformative potential of the line for both human mobility and industrial logistics.
Project Overview and Key Indicators
The Gara Djebilet–Tindouf–Béchar Mining Railway spans 950 km, engineered to facilitate passenger travel at 160 km/h and freight, including mineral transport, at 80 km/h. The line is designed to operate 24 trains daily for minerals, alongside two passenger and two freight trains. This infrastructural marvel consolidates Algeria’s position as a rising industrial power capable of fully leveraging its strategic mineral resources.
Key milestones of the project include the groundbreaking in November 2023, commissioning of the Béchar–Abadla segment (100 km) in April 2025, completion of the Tindouf–Gara Djebilet segment (135 km) on July 5, 2025, and finalization of the full line by December 31, 2025—well ahead of the original June 2026 deadline.

The railway’s construction involved 15.24 million cubic meters of embankment, 54.28 million cubic meters of excavation, and 2.58 million cubic meters of layered structural work, with 1,026.22 km of track laid and supported by 1.6 million precast concrete sleepers. The line integrates 45 major railway bridges (totaling 20.04 km), including the 4.11 km Daoura River Bridge, alongside 50 overpasses and underpasses. Seven stations—Abadla, Hamaguir, Tabelbala, Hassi Khebi, Oum El Assel, Tindouf, and Gara Djebilet—serve the corridor, while a workforce of 11,457 skilled laborers operated across 38 prefabrication workshops and multiple sleeper production units, supplemented by 471 quarries and sand pits.
Gara Djebilet: From Vision to Strategic Reality
Gara Djebilet, located in Algeria’s extreme southwest, hosts one of the world’s largest untapped iron ore reserves, exceeding 3.5 billion tonnes, with over 1.7 billion tonnes exploitable. The project’s execution overcame historical logistical and technical challenges, including the region’s isolation, lack of infrastructure, and high-phosphorus ore requiring specialized processing.
Under the determined leadership of President Tebboune, the first stone was laid in November 2023, culminating in the announcement of operational exploitation in November 2025. This initiative is set to generate over 25,000 direct and indirect jobs and stimulate a wide industrial ecosystem anchored by the railway and associated processing facilities. Economists note that such large-scale transport infrastructure is historically central to economic transformation, as evidenced in nations that leveraged railways to drive industrialization and market integration.
Strategic and Economic Impact
The railway drastically reduces logistical constraints, replacing over fifty heavy-duty trucks per train journey and cutting transport time from Tindouf to Oran via Béchar from over a week to less than two days. This enables efficient exploitation of Gara Djebilet’s iron ore, supports national steel industries, and enhances Algeria’s competitiveness in global markets amid rising international demand and resource scarcity.
The mine’s western section is currently operational, producing 2–3 million tonnes annually, with ambitions to scale up to 50 million tonnes by 2040. The partnership with Chinese expertise ensures the advanced processing of high-phosphorus ore and robust investment in technological solutions.
