Algeria Launches Major Yeast Factory in Djelfa to Achieve Full Self-Sufficiency

$160 Million Project Aims to Eliminate Annual Imports, Create 800 Jobs, and Position Algeria as a Future Regional Exporter

Algiers, Algeria | June 21st, 2025 — In a move toward national industrial self-reliance, Algeria has taken a strategic step to cut its dependency on yeast imports with the construction of a major yeast production facility in the southern province of Djelfa. The project, led by CHEMICAL SIM, was inspected on Saturday by the Minister of Industry, Sifi Ghrieb, as part of his field visit to the region.

The factory is set to be one of the country’s cornerstone industrial investments, as it will directly contribute to covering Algeria’s entire domestic demand for industrial yeast, a key component in food processing and pharmaceuticals. According to a statement from the Ministry of Industry, this landmark project is expected to drastically reduce the nation’s import bill, which currently exceeds $100 million annually, and pave the way for exports once self-sufficiency is reached.

Technical and Economic Highlights of the Project:

• Total surface area: 54,000 m²

• Annual production capacity: 30,000 tonnes

• Total investment: 22 billion DZD (approx. $160 million)

• Job creation: 300 direct jobs and 500 indirect jobs

• Storage capacity: equivalent to six months of national demand

• Projected operational launch: January 2026

During the site visit, Minister Ghrieb was briefed on the technical stages of construction, future production scenarios, and the institutional frameworks necessary to fast-track the plant’s commissioning. He hailed the project as a model of strategic industrialization that aligns with national priorities, particularly food security, industrial substitution, and export development.

“This is not merely a factory—it is a symbol of Algeria’s capacity to transform strategic imports into domestic production capabilities,” the minister emphasized, calling on local stakeholders to support the successful execution of the project within its proposed timeline.

The factory is being built with a six-month buffer storage capacity, giving Algeria critical flexibility in supply chain management, especially during global market disruptions. Once fully operational in early 2026, it is expected to completely fulfill national yeast requirements, while also generating surplus for regional markets, particularly in North and West Africa.
