With landmark agreements in battery storage and electricity generation, Algeria secures top position in global electricity sector deals, underscoring its rising influence in the renewable and energy transition markets.

Algiers, Algeria | May 8th, 2025 — In a major demonstration of its growing stature in the global energy sector, Algeria has topped the list of the world’s five largest electricity-related deals for April 2025, according to the monthly report published by Energy Platform, a leading international energy monitoring outlet.

At the heart of Algeria’s dominant position lies a groundbreaking agreement signed by the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies aimed at launching an integrated project to develop the nation’s lithium value chain and boost electricity storage capabilities through advanced battery technologies.

The historic deal, which has drawn significant international attention, was signed between the National Office of Geological and Mining Research (ORGM), representing the state-owned SONARAM Group, and Professor Karim Zaghib—an internationally renowned expert in lithium-iron-phosphate battery technology. Professor Zaghib’s collaboration marks a milestone for Algeria, placing it firmly on the global map of advanced battery manufacturing and strategic mineral development.

Under this comprehensive agreement, Algeria plans to capitalize on its untapped national reserves of lithium, iron, and phosphate to build a complete and vertically integrated supply chain for electricity storage solutions. This strategic move will significantly reduce dependence on imports, foster local industrialization, and position Algeria as a critical player in the energy transition economy.

In addition to the lithium deal, Algeria further cemented its lead by advancing a key electricity production project in Ain Oussera, Djelfa Province. SONELGAZ—Algeria’s state utility company—confirmed it had reached a preliminary agreement with the Spanish firm DURO FELGUERA to move forward with the completion of the Ain Oussera power plant.

Importantly, the project will now be entrusted to a consortium of three major Chinese companies, following the Spanish firm’s proposal to delegate the remaining works. This international partnership is set to breathe new life into a critical power infrastructure project, enhancing grid capacity and reliability in central Algeria.

The dual breakthroughs—one focused on cutting-edge battery technology and the other on bolstering power generation—have thrust Algeria to the forefront of energy development in the region and beyond. These initiatives reflect not only a growing commitment to diversifying the national energy portfolio but also a broader vision of asserting energy sovereignty and technological self-sufficiency.

With its strategic mineral wealth, forward-looking policies, and deepening international partnerships, Algeria is no longer merely a gas-exporting nation—it is evolving into a key hub for renewable technologies and a pivotal force in shaping the future of energy in Africa and the Mediterranean.
