Algeria Leads the Maghreb in Global University Rankings

Algiers – October 2025 – Algeria has achieved a remarkable academic milestone, securing the top position among Maghreb countries and the second place at the continental level in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. This accomplishment underscores the nation’s growing prominence in higher education and research across Africa and beyond.
In a celebratory message posted on his official Facebook page, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari, congratulated the academic community and the nation at large, declaring: “Congratulations to Algeria for clinching the first Maghreb and second African ranking in terms of the number of universities listed in the THE World University Rankings.”
An Expanding Academic Presence Minister Baddari revealed that the 2026 edition of the THE rankings includes 28 Algerian higher education institutions, up from 26 in the 2025 edition. This steady rise reflects the continuous progress of Algeria’s national university system and the tangible improvement in academic and research performance across the country.
Sidi Bel Abbes and El Oued Lead Nationally At the national level, the universities of Sidi Bel Abbes and El Oued shared the top position, both ranked within the 1200–1500 global bracket. Their inclusion attests to the balanced geographical distribution of academic excellence across Algeria’s provinces, demonstrating that high-level education and research are no longer confined to the capital or major urban centers.
This latest achievement stands as clear evidence of the success of Algeria’s higher education and research strategy, which emphasizes quality, innovation, and regional equity. It further consolidates Algeria’s position as a leading academic force in the Maghreb and a rising contender on the African and global academic stage.
