Algeria Maintains Its Strategic Position as a Key Gas Supplier to the European Union

Algiers – November 2025 – Algeria has reaffirmed its pivotal role in European energy security, exporting 29 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas to the European Union over the first three quarters of the current year, according to the latest report by the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel, drawing on data from Bloomberg and Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE).
Despite a decline of more than one bcm compared to the same period last year, Algeria remains a cornerstone supplier of both pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU, with Italy continuing as the primary destination for Algerian dry gas.
Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security data indicate that Algeria exported nearly 14.5 bcm to Italy via the Transmed pipeline during the first eight months of the year, representing a 35.5% market share. Overall, Algeria’s gas exports to the European Union remain relatively stable, with a marginal dip attributed to lower natural gas demand across the continent and the temporary maintenance of the country’s largest liquefaction facility at the beginning of 2025.
In the face of intense global competition, Algeria has successfully maintained its strategic and reliable position, unlike other suppliers whose market shares have contracted, with the exception of the United States, which continues to dominate the European LNG sector.
Analysis from Bruegel underscores that the final quarter of each year traditionally witnesses increased export volumes, driven by heightened demand in anticipation of the European winter. Algerian shipments during this period have consistently averaged 11 bcm over the past three years. On an annual basis, Algeria’s total gas exports have remained resilient, with volumes of 41.3 bcm in 2024 and 43 bcm in 2023, signaling no sharp downturn in comparison to previous years.
Looking ahead to 2026, Algeria anticipates further expansion, with Germany expected to source approximately 4 bcm annually from Algerian gas, reinforcing the country’s strategic leverage in the European energy landscape.
To capitalize on these opportunities, Algeria is set to further exploit its strategic assets, including the Transmed and Medgaz pipelines, and to bolster its LNG production capacities. This approach aligns with ongoing national efforts to enhance gas output through development projects and the exploration of new fields, ensuring Algeria’s continued influence in a European gas market undergoing significant reconfiguration, marked by the emergence of new players vying for market share.
