Algeria Marks 63 Years of United Nations Membership: A Legacy of Principled Diplomacy and Global Leadership

Algiers – October 2025 – Algeria celebrates this Wednesday the sixty-third anniversary of its accession to the United Nations as a full member, marking more than six decades of active diplomacy, moral authority, and steadfast advocacy for justice, peace, and self-determination. Since raising its flag at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on October 8, 1962—an historic act performed by Ahmed Ben Bella, the first President of independent Algeria— the nation has consistently embodied the principles of the UN Charter through a foreign policy rooted in independence, solidarity, and the defense of oppressed peoples.
From the early days of its liberation struggle, Algeria’s foreign policy has been a natural extension of its revolutionary ideals. The country’s unwavering support for decolonization movements across Africa, Asia, and Latin America made it a beacon for the oppressed and a champion of international justice. Guided by the timeless values of the November 1st Declaration, Algeria became synonymous with moral diplomacy — a diplomacy that does not seek dominance or gain, but stands firm for what is right and just.
Under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria’s diplomacy has entered a new era of revitalization and global influence. Upon assuming office, President Tebboune placed diplomacy “at the heart of national priorities,” reaffirming Algeria’s role as a key voice for peace, sovereignty, and multilateralism. His vision has reasserted Algeria’s place among the nations that shape global discourse on conflict resolution, development, and justice.
The country’s election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in January 2024, followed by its presidency of the Council later that same month, was a testament to the renewed confidence of the international community in Algeria’s responsible and balanced diplomacy. The achievement reflects not only Algeria’s credibility but also the trust it enjoys among nations that share its vision of a fairer and more representative international order.
In the halls of the United Nations, Algeria continues to play a pivotal and respected role. Its diplomatic machinery, led by Permanent Representative Ammar Benjamâa, has waged principled battles for the Palestinian and Sahrawi causes — two emblematic struggles for self-determination and decolonization. With skill, conviction, and statesmanship, Benjamâa has defended Palestine, “the central cause of the Arab world,” and Western Sahara, “the last colony in Africa,” embodying Algeria’s consistent commitment to justice and international legality. His dedication was fittingly recognized by President Tebboune, who awarded him the Order of National Merit in acknowledgment of his devotion and excellence in representing Algeria before the UN.
Throughout its six-decade membership, Algeria has been the voice of the Arab and African worlds within the United Nations — a tireless advocate for the oppressed, a proponent of peace, and an unwavering supporter of legitimate struggles for freedom. Its initiatives have repeatedly called upon the UN Security Council and General Assembly to assume their moral and legal responsibilities toward the Palestinian people, urging an end to the ongoing Israeli aggression and the recognition of Palestine as an independent state. President Tebboune has repeatedly emphasized that “the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state is not a choice, but a historical inevitability essential for restoring peace and stability throughout the Middle East.”
Similarly, Algeria has reaffirmed at every opportunity the need for a just, lasting political solution to the question of Western Sahara, grounded in international law and UN resolutions, enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination. In doing so, Algeria stands as a rare voice of coherence and principle in a world too often governed by double standards.
On the African stage, Algeria remains a cornerstone of regional stability and a driving force for African unity. Within the Security Council, it has continued to advocate for the continent’s interests, defending the principle of “African solutions to African problems” and rejecting any form of foreign military intervention in the Sahel and Sahara regions. Its position underscores a deep commitment to sovereignty, regional ownership, and sustainable peace.
At the same time, Algeria has been at the forefront of calls for reforming the UN Security Council to ensure fairer representation for Africa, in recognition of the continent’s growing role and sacrifices in maintaining global peace and security.
As the United Nations itself celebrates its 80th anniversary this month, Algeria’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, seized the occasion to reaffirm Algeria’s loyalty to the principles of the UN Charter. “Algeria’s tenure in the Security Council,” he declared, “has been one of fidelity to the values and principles enshrined in the UN Charter, in full accordance with the vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.” Minister Attaf also hailed the “exceptional level of coordination” within the A3+ group (Algeria, Somalia, and Sierra Leone, joined by Guyana), whose unity and cohesion have given Africa a stronger and more coherent voice within the Council.
Sixty-three years after its accession to the United Nations, Algeria stands taller than ever on the international stage — a nation faithful to its revolutionary heritage, committed to the principles of justice and equality, and resolutely dedicated to the construction of a world where law prevails over force. In a global landscape marked by turbulence and polarization, Algeria’s diplomacy shines as a rare example of integrity, independence, and moral leadership — a reflection of the enduring spirit of a people who fought for their freedom and now defend the freedom of others.
