Algeria Marks World Arabic Language Day with a Strong Commitment to Cultural and Linguistic Identity

Algiers – December 2025 – Algeria commemorated World Arabic Language Day on Sunday in Algiers during an official ceremony presided over by the Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of the National Community Abroad, Sofiane Chaib, in a powerful affirmation of the country’s enduring commitment to the Arabic language as a cornerstone of national identity and cultural continuity.
Organized in coordination with Salah Belaïd, President of the High Council of the Arabic Language (HCLA), the ceremony brought together representatives of Algerian diplomatic and consular missions abroad, highlighting the transnational dimension of the Arabic language and its unifying role among Algerians worldwide.
The celebration marked the culmination of a full month of cultural, linguistic and educational activities aimed at strengthening the ties between children of the Algerian diaspora and their cultural heritage. These initiatives provided young participants with an opportunity to express their attachment to Algeria and their pride in belonging to a rich linguistic and civilizational legacy.
In his address, Sofiane Chaib underlined the strategic importance accorded by Algerian authorities to the promotion of the Arabic language. He emphasized that teaching Arabic to Algerian children living abroad remains a fundamental pillar of preserving national identity, stressing that language is not merely a means of communication but a vessel of memory, values and collective consciousness. In this context, he announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Ministry of National Education, is working on new educational initiatives designed to meet the expectations and needs of the Algerian community abroad.
The Secretary of State also revealed plans to open several Algerian cultural centers overseas, which will serve as platforms for promoting the Arabic language and fostering cultural exchange. These centers will facilitate educational visits to Algeria for pupils and students from the diaspora, enabling them to reconnect directly with the country’s history, culture and collective memory.
Among the initiatives announced are the organization of a winter university for Algerian students living abroad and the launch of a “Journey of Memory” visit for children who participated in the National Emigration Day competition, commemorated annually on October 17. These programs aim to anchor younger generations in their historical roots while reinforcing their sense of belonging to the nation.
For his part, the President of the High Council of the Arabic Language praised the unique character of the event and the active engagement of the Algerian community across the globe. He called on members of the diaspora to continue safeguarding their linguistic and cultural heritage, viewing this commitment as a vital bridge connecting them to their homeland.
The ceremony also featured video addresses from Algerian ambassadors in several countries, alongside presentations of various programs and activities organized across 50 Algerian diplomatic and consular representations worldwide. These initiatives were carried out under the slogan: “The Arabic Language: A Bridge of Belonging and Unity of Consciousness.”
