Algeria, Mauritania Forge Ahead with Ambitious Commercial and Industrial Projects

Permanent Algerian Market in Nouakchott, Textile Production Hub, and Large-Scale Agricultural Ventures Signal Strong Bilateral Economic Momentum

Algiers, Algeria | May 27th, 2025 — In a landmark step that signals a deepening of economic ties between Algeria and Mauritania, a series of ambitious Algerian-led commercial and industrial projects have been announced on Mauritanian soil, aimed at expanding Algerian exports and promoting national products across West African markets.

 

These initiatives, spearheaded by Algerian economic operators and backed by state support, were unveiled on the sidelines of the 7th Algerian Products Fair in Nouakchott, running from May 22 to 28, 2025. Over 200 Algerian companies from various sectors participated in the event, underscoring Algeria’s strategic push towards economic integration and market expansion in Africa.

 

Permanent Algerian Market in Nouakchott Nears Completion

One of the flagship projects is the establishment of a permanent Algerian market in Nouakchott, set to open in the coming months. With more than 200 retail outlets exclusively dedicated to Algerian goods, this market aims to bring Algerian products closer to Mauritanian consumers and serve as a commercial hub for Algerian exporters.

 

Bilal Fateh Chennouf, President of the Association of Algerian Merchants in Mauritania, emphasized that the market will complement the ongoing permanent Algerian products fair and will provide Algerian traders with affordable leasing opportunities. “The Algerian product enjoys a high level of trust among Mauritanian consumers due to its quality and compliance with international standards,” Chennouf stated to the APS.

 

Textile Industry Set for Takeoff in Nouakchott

In the textile sector, Slimane Hadri, Secretary General of the Algerian Federation of Textiles and Leather, announced the imminent launch of a major industrial project. “Within two months, a textile production, exhibition, and distribution center will be inaugurated in Nouakchott,” Hadri confirmed. The project will bring together Algerian manufacturers from several provinces and utilize local raw materials to ensure long-term supply and competitiveness.

 

“This initiative is a direct response to the overwhelming enthusiasm Mauritanian consumers showed toward Algerian textiles during the fair,” Hadri added, expressing confidence in the sustainability and expansion of Algerian textile presence in West Africa.

 

Agricultural Exports Gain Ground in Nouadhibou

Expanding into the agro-commercial sector, Hamza Moussous, manager of an Algerian agricultural export firm, revealed an agreement with a Mauritanian partner to open a large commercial center in Nouadhibou dedicated to Algerian agricultural products. Plans are already underway to extend retail and wholesale distribution to additional cities across Mauritania.

 

Strategic Agricultural and Real Estate Investment in Keur Macene

Further south, near the Mauritania–Senegal border, the Algerian Belaid Group has established a pioneering agricultural project in Keur Macene, cultivating 30 hectares as part of a pilot program. “Our initial potato harvest marks a significant step toward deeper market penetration and future expansion,” said Mourad Belaid, commercial director of the group’s Mauritanian subsidiary.

 

Beyond agriculture, the group is also eyeing the real estate sector. A comprehensive urban development project of 1,000 housing units is currently under review by Mauritania’s Ministry of Housing. Belaid described the initiative as “a mini-city equipped with full infrastructure and services,” noting the vital support provided by the Algerian Union Bank (AUB) in streamlining financial and trade operations.

 

Bilateral Ties at an All-Time High

The success and scale of these projects reflect not only Algeria’s strategic vision for continental economic leadership but also the robustness of Algerian-Mauritanian diplomatic and economic relations. Officials and entrepreneurs alike lauded the supportive investment climate in Mauritania, which has been instrumental in enabling Algerian investors to plant firm roots in key sectors.

 

The Algerian-Mauritanian partnership is rapidly evolving from diplomatic goodwill to concrete, high-impact ventures—ushering in a new era of regional cooperation, industrial collaboration, and commercial influence across West Africa.
