Algeria, Mauritania Launch Grand Parliamentary Commission to Strengthen Strategic Partnership

𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓕𝓮𝓫𝓻𝓾𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 –  The speakers of the Algerian People’s National Assembly (APN), Brahim Boughali, and the Mauritanian National Assembly, Mohamed Bamba Meguett, convened in Algiers on Friday for the first session of the Grand Algerian-Mauritanian Parliamentary Commission, signaling a shared commitment to elevate bilateral cooperation to a comprehensive strategic partnership. Both leaders emphasized that the commission represents a deliberate strategic choice to institutionalize relations, enhance coordination and consultation, and make parliamentary action a true lever for advancing the global partnership between the two nations.

Opening the session, Boughali underlined the symbolic and practical significance of this initiative, noting that Mauritania is the first country with which the APN establishes such a Grand Commission. He highlighted that this choice reflects the privileged position of Algerian-Mauritanian relations and embodies the political will of both countries’ leaderships to raise bilateral cooperation to higher levels of integration and effectiveness.

Describing the session as a qualitative step in parliamentary cooperation, Boughali stressed that the Parliament’s role extends beyond the ratification of agreements to include the development of legislative initiatives that promote investment, strengthen confidence among economic actors, and support strategic projects to ensure their sustainability and development impact. He emphasized that the commission should serve as a practical framework for regular coordination, expert exchanges, and an effective mechanism for monitoring and evaluating the socio-economic impact of joint projects.

The session agenda focuses on enhancing economic cooperation, expanding trade, promoting infrastructure, and exploring investment and collaboration opportunities in the energy sector. Boughali highlighted the strategic importance of joint projects such as the Tindouf-Zouerate road, the bilateral border post, and the launch of the first Algerian bank in Mauritania, as milestones for strengthening regional integration.

Framing these initiatives within a broader regional vision, Boughali stressed Algeria’s conviction that sustainable development and stability require reinforcing cooperation among brotherly nations, fostering complementarity over competition, and prioritizing dialogue and consultation to address shared challenges. The creation of the Grand Parliamentary Commission is thus a direct reflection of this vision, institutionalizing parliamentary diplomacy as a complementary tool to government action and an active partner in implementing bilateral agreements.

For his part, Bamba Meguett lauded the remarkable level of fraternal relations between Algeria and Mauritania and emphasized the strategic importance of the commission as a platform for sustaining consultation and translating bilateral cooperation into tangible outcomes. He highlighted the leadership’s shared ambition to elevate relations to a strategic level, reflecting deep ties and mutual respect.

The Mauritanian speaker also underscored the importance of focusing on economic cooperation, trade development, investment opportunities, and collaboration in health and energy sectors, while considering the establishment of specialized technical parliamentary committees to oversee the implementation of joint projects.

The two-day session, held under the theme “Activating the Parliamentary Role in Supporting and Strengthening Bilateral Economic Cooperation between Algeria and Mauritania: Toward an Integrated and Sustainable Partnership”, will conclude on Saturday afternoon with the adoption of recommendations and a joint communiqué.
