Minister Arkab Discusses Industrial Localization, Technological Innovation, and Continental Cooperation with CEO Raul Pereda

Algiers, Algeria | June 10th, 2025 — In a high-level meeting underscoring Algeria’s strategic drive to modernize and localize its energy sector, Mohamed Arkab, Minister of State and Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, received Raul Pereda, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Power Aero, at the ministry’s headquarters in Algiers. The discussions, held in the presence of Noureddine Yassaâ, Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, senior ministry officials, and representatives from Sonelgaz and Mitsubishi Power, focused on intensifying bilateral cooperation in key energy segments.  

The talks highlighted the growing convergence between Algerian energy priorities and Mitsubishi Power Aero’s technological capabilities. Central to the discussions were avenues of collaboration in advanced electrical equipment, gas turbine systems, mobile power generation stations, and innovative energy production technologies tailored to Algeria’s unique geographical challenges, particularly in remote and hard-to-access areas.

Minister Arkab praised what he described as the “excellent and historic relationship” between Algeria’s national utility Sonelgaz and Mitsubishi Power Aero, calling for a new phase in the partnership. He emphasized the necessity of transitioning from traditional supply agreements toward deeper industrial integration. “It is time to localize the manufacturing and maintenance of gas turbines in Algeria,” Arkab stated, urging Mitsubishi to contribute to the development of local content and human capital through expanded training programs, skills transfer, and joint R&D initiatives.

“The strategic deployment of these competencies will position Algeria not only as a self-reliant energy hub but also as a springboard for regional energy leadership,” the minister affirmed, alluding to the national vision of leveraging partnerships with global leaders to secure a competitive position across the African continent. He stressed that public enterprises such as Sonelgaz and Sonatrach play a crucial role in implementing this forward-looking strategy.

In response, CEO Raul Pereda reiterated Mitsubishi Power Aero’s firm commitment to the Algerian market and expressed his company’s readiness to contribute to Algeria’s energy transformation. “We deeply value the solid trust placed in us by Algeria. Our longstanding collaboration with Sonelgaz is a model of technical partnership, and we are eager to deepen this engagement through industrial co-development and capacity-building,” he declared.

Pereda also emphasized Mitsubishi Power Aero’s confidence in the Algerian energy sector’s evolution, praising the government’s openness to innovation and localization. He acknowledged Algeria’s potential to become a strategic node in Africa’s energy grid, supported by modern infrastructure, skilled labor, and favorable public policies.

The meeting marks a pivotal moment in Algerian-Japanese energy cooperation, signaling a shift from transactional relations to strategic alignment. Both sides agreed to follow up with concrete projects in the coming months that could include feasibility studies, pilot programs, and the potential establishment of local assembly units or technology hubs.
