Algeria Moves to Fortify Media Sovereignty Amid Disinformation Threats

Speaking on Thursday during a plenary session at the People’s National Assembly, Bouamama stressed that the acceleration of digital technologies and rapid transformations in the media landscape demand a robust institutional response. Strengthening Algeria’s media ecosystem, he said, is essential to preserving national unity and countering coordinated efforts to manipulate public opinion through false narratives.

“Faced with the rise of digital platforms and the pace of change, it is imperative to reinforce and consolidate national media spaces to protect the social fabric and the country’s interests,” Bouamama told lawmakers, adding that Algeria remains the target of campaigns aimed at falsifying facts and spreading misinformation.

The minister called for the formulation of a comprehensive media strategy grounded in a holistic vision that guarantees citizens timely access to reliable information. Such an environment, he argued, is necessary to “block those disturbed by Algeria’s renewed prominence as a pivotal state in the region,” a reference to Algeria’s expanding diplomatic and geopolitical role.

Bouamama also praised the efforts of Algerian media professionals in confronting disinformation, urging continued support for national media institutions so they can deliver services marked by high standards of professionalism. In this context, he noted that the decision by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to establish a dedicated media city forms part of a broader strategy to modernise the sector and enhance its institutional capacity.

Addressing controversial content circulating on social networks, Bouamama clarified that influencer activity does not fall under the framework of regulated media, while acknowledging that many content creators have aligned with state initiatives to improve the quality and responsibility of their productions.

He further recalled that Algerian law obliges audiovisual organisations to respect the country’s religious reference and national constants, adding that measures have been taken in certain cases, including suspending the broadcast of specific series or channels when they contravened established standards. At the same time, he welcomed productions that have encouraged audiences to reconnect with national television channels.

The minister concluded by affirming that his department is working to finalise executive decrees related to audiovisual production and filming authorisations, a step he described as essential to ensuring regulatory clarity and fostering a professional and ethical media environment.
