Algeria, Niger Turn Page on Diplomatic Chill, Tebboune Says After Tiani Visit

ALGIERS – February 16, 2026 – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said Monday that the official visit of his Nigerien counterpart Abdourahamane Tiani to Algeria had “put an end to a period of coolness in bilateral relations,” stressing that ties between the two neighboring nations were being revitalized across strategic sectors.

Speaking during a joint statement alongside President Tiani, Tebboune underscored that despite diplomatic strains, the peoples of Niger and Algeria had maintained enduring bonds of fraternity. He announced that the two sides had agreed to strengthen cooperation in security, energy, hydrocarbons, electricity, university and vocational training, and military education.

“We agreed to launch the project to build a gas pipeline crossing Nigerien territory, and practical procedures will begin immediately after the end of Ramadan to start laying the pipeline on Nigerien soil, God willing,” Tebboune said.

The Algerian president reaffirmed Algeria’s readiness to support Niger “in all its needs, without sparing any means at our disposal,” adding that discussions had also advanced on projects in healthcare, the construction of secondary education institutions, the establishment of a renal dialysis service, and the creation of a press house in the Nigerien capital, Niamey, to serve the local media community.

On counter-terrorism cooperation, Tebboune stressed that both countries stood “in the same camp,” pledging Algeria’s expertise and resources in confronting shared security challenges. He further highlighted the depth of historical ties, noting that the Algerian and Nigerien peoples would remain “two fraternal and neighboring nations bound by solid relations.”

For his part, President Tiani said his visit reflected Niger’s determination to reinforce fraternal relations and bilateral cooperation, praising the historical bonds between the two countries and their shared ambition to inject new momentum into neighborly ties.

Tiani also commended Algeria’s stance in support of Niger’s sovereignty and political choices, describing it as an honorable position for both the Algerian government and its people. He emphasized that no African nation could imagine Algeria allowing its territory to be used against a brotherly African state, adding that “an important page in the history of the Sahel and Africa is being written today.”

The visit, both leaders said, marks a renewed chapter in Algerian-Nigerien relations, grounded in solidarity, regional stability, and expanded economic and security cooperation.
