Strategic participation underscores Algeria’s ambition to become a key player in the international clean energy market

Algiers, Algeria | May 19th, 2025 — Algeria has taken a decisive step forward in asserting its role on the global clean energy stage by actively participating in the World Hydrogen Summit, held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, from May 20 to 22, 2025. This event—organized through collaboration between the Sustainable Energy Council (SEC), RX Global, and in partnership with the Dutch Government, the Province of South Holland, and the Port of Rotterdam—has brought together over 15,000 participants from around the globe, including government officials, corporate leaders, and international financial institutions.

Representing Algeria at the summit is Noureddine Yassaâ, Secretary of State to the Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, in charge of Renewable Energies, accompanied by a high-level delegation composed of senior officials from the ministry, executives from Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, as well as renowned national experts specializing in green hydrogen and renewable energy technologies.

In a keynote address entitled “The Hydrogen Economy in Algeria,” Yassaâ presented the country’s strategic roadmap for developing a sustainable hydrogen ecosystem. He emphasized Algeria’s national vision to harness its vast renewable energy potential—particularly solar energy—and cutting-edge energy infrastructure to position itself as a reliable and influential player in the global hydrogen economy.

“Algeria is no longer a spectator in the energy transition. We are an active contributor, committed to decarbonization and economic diversification through innovation in green hydrogen,” Yassaâ declared during his address, underscoring the country’s firm dedication to international climate goals.

In addition to delivering his presentation, Yassaâ also participated in a high-level roundtable discussion focused on global hydrogen market dynamics, cross-border trade opportunities, and mechanisms to accelerate international cooperation in clean hydrogen development.

On the sidelines of the summit, the Algerian delegation held a series of bilateral meetings with counterparts from other nations and executives of major international energy firms. These talks aimed to deepen partnerships and explore new joint ventures in the field of clean energy and hydrogen production.

The Algerian pavilion at the summit’s accompanying exhibition served as a vibrant showcase of the country’s immense potential in the hydrogen value chain. From pilot projects to investment-ready opportunities, the pavilion highlighted Algeria’s strategic assets—abundant sun, vast landmass, proximity to European markets, and robust energy infrastructure—as foundations for a future hydrogen export hub.

The Ministry of Energy reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to implementing its ambitious national hydrogen strategy. This includes intensifying efforts to strengthen partnerships with key European players, particularly Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, as well as with the European Union more broadly. These collaborations are crystallizing in strategic trans-Mediterranean initiatives such as the SoutH2 Corridor and Medlink projects, which aim to supply green hydrogen and electricity from North Africa to European markets through integrated pipeline and energy networks.

Algeria’s participation in the World Hydrogen Summit not only reflects its alignment with the global energy transition but also signals a clear determination to lead in shaping the future of green energy in the Mediterranean and African regions.

This engagement marks a new chapter in Algeria’s energy diplomacy—one that transcends hydrocarbons and paves the way for sustainable economic growth, environmental responsibility, and technological sovereignty.
