Algeria Participates as Observer in Morocco-Polisario Talks in Madrid

𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓕𝓮𝓫𝓻𝓾𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – The United States convened direct talks between the Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco on February 8 and 9 at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid to address the ongoing Western Sahara conflict. Algeria and Mauritania were invited to participate strictly as observers, reflecting their status as neighboring states.

“Morocco has long demonstrated a penchant for equating its desires with realities, particularly regarding the Western Sahara conflict,” a senior official close to the matter told TSA. The official emphasized that “the manner in which Moroccan media outlets strive to portray these direct negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations and the United States bears no relation to the actual conduct of these talks.”

The official further highlighted the motivations behind this latest attempt at diversion. Negotiating directly with the Polisario Front—which Morocco seeks at all costs to label as a “terrorist organization”—represents a “genuine national embarrassment” for the monarchy.

Pointing to the “unyielding and unequivocal reality,” the source clarified that the Kingdom of Morocco is, in fact, engaging directly with the Polisario Front over the future of Western Sahara. Algeria, like Mauritania, participates solely in an observer capacity, a role naturally accorded to them as neighboring countries.

“Regarding the resolution of the Western Sahara conflict, the true course and genuine approach will ultimately prevail. Any solution to this dispute will inevitably be the product of direct negotiations between the parties involved, as currently unfolding,” the official concluded.
