Algiers – November 2025 –  Algeria reaffirmed its strategic commitment to clean energy transition and partnership with Europe through its participation in an international evaluation meeting held Wednesday in Berlin, Germany, dedicated to reviewing the progress of the Algeria to Europe Hydrogen Alliance (ALTEH2A) and the SoutH2 Corridor projects. The event marked a significant milestone in advancing cooperation between Algeria and its European partners in the hydrogen sector.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Hydraulics and Mines, Algeria was represented by a high-level delegation including the Chief Executive Officer of Sonatrach, Noureddine Daoudi, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines, and representatives from both Sonatrach and Sonelgaz. The meeting brought together senior officials from Germany, Italy, and Austria to assess project progress and discuss the necessary conditions for ensuring the success of this strategic partnership.

Two Strategic Projects Anchored in Algeria’s Renewable Potential

The ministry emphasized that the ALTEH2A initiative—Algeria to Europe Hydrogen Alliance—is founded upon Algeria’s immense renewable energy potential. It seeks to harness these resources to produce green hydrogen and supply the European market via the SoutH2 Corridor. This initiative is poised to generate sustainable growth opportunities and strengthen international cooperation in the field of clean energy.

The SoutH2 Corridor project, jointly implemented by Sonatrach and Sonelgaz (Algeria), VNG (Germany), SNAM and SEA Corridor (Italy), and Verbund Green Hydrogen (Austria), has been officially recognized by the European Commission as a Project of Common Interest (PCI)—a designation that underscores its strategic importance in developing cross-border energy infrastructure and accelerating Europe’s green transition.

Reaffirming Algeria’s Commitment to a Strategic Partnership with Europe

The ministry further recalled that in October 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed among the six companies to conduct joint studies across the entire hydrogen value chain. This was followed in January 2025 by a Joint Political Support Declaration endorsed by the governments of Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Austria, and Germany—reaffirming their sustained commitment to the project and its medium- and long-term implementation.

Speaking on behalf of Minister of State for Hydrocarbons and Mines Mohamed Arkab, the ministry’s Secretary-General highlighted Algeria’s unwavering resolve to build a strategic partnership with Europe in the green hydrogen sector. He stressed that hydrogen stands as a central pillar in both national and global energy transition strategies.

Hydrogen Development: A National Strategic Priority

He reiterated that Algeria—long recognized as a reliable energy partner—possesses the resources and infrastructure to become a leading supplier of clean energy to Europe. With abundant solar and wind energy potential, advanced energy infrastructure, and a well-established pipeline network connecting directly to European markets, Algeria is well positioned to play a transformative role in the continent’s clean energy future.

The official also outlined Algeria’s three-phase national strategy for developing a hydrogen-based economy. As part of this roadmap, a semi-industrial pilot plant with a capacity of 50 MW for green hydrogen and its derivatives is under preparation in Arzew, supported financially by the German government and the European Union.

For his part, Sonatrach CEO Noureddine Daoudi described the Berlin meeting as a crucial step in assessing the progress of Algerian-European cooperation in hydrogen development. He noted that the ALTEH2A and SoutH2 Corridor projects reflect a tangible realization of the shared vision between Algeria and Europe—to produce green hydrogen on Algerian soil and export it to European markets, reinforcing Algeria’s role as a key player in the global clean energy landscape.
