Algeria Places African Economic Integration at the Core of Its Strategic Vision, Says Minister Oualid

๐๐ต๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป๐ผ โ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ป๐พ๐ช๐ป๐ ๐๐๐๐ โย Algeria attaches central importance to the achievement of economic integration across the African continent, Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Minister Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid affirmed on Thursday in Algiers, highlighting the countryโs long-term commitment to regional connectivity and intra-African trade.
Speaking during a debate session held as part of the high-level conference co-organized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Bank of Algeria at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center, under the theme โNorth Africa: Connecting Continents, Creating Opportunities,โ Oualid stressed that Algeria is actively working to strengthen regional economic integration through large-scale projects designed to consolidate interconnection and stimulate intra-African trade.
The minister cited several flagship initiatives, including the Trans-Saharan Highway, the gas pipeline linking Algeria and Nigeria, ongoing railway projects, and the launch of new air routes connecting Algeria to multiple African cities. He underlined that such projects are instrumental in boosting intra-African trade, which currently represents only 18 percent of the continentโs total trade volume, compared with 59 percent in Asia and 67 percent in Europe.
Oualid emphasized that investing in infrastructure, fully operationalizing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and facilitating banking and financial transactions between African countries are critical steps toward expanding trade flows and unlocking promising markets across the continent.
โThe African continent needs at least 200 billion dollars in infrastructure investment,โ the minister noted, pointing out that only a limited number of countries are making concrete commitments in this sector. In this regard, he reaffirmed that Algeria stands among the countries that have delivered tangible projects in support of economic integration, calling on other African nations to adopt a similar approach to strengthen cooperation, investment, and intra-African trade.
Participants in the debate also examined shared growth opportunities and the challenges facing regional economic integration, stressing the importance of investing in key sectors across North Africaโparticularly agriculture and infrastructureโto promote inclusive economic growth and create new avenues of cooperation between African and European countries.
