Algiers, Algeria | May 20, 2024 — The Algeria-Poland Business Forum, held on Sunday in Algiers, showcased a significant commitment from economic operators of both nations to forge stronger investment partnerships and intensify bilateral trade. Organized by the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACI) in collaboration with the Polish Chamber of Commerce and the Polish Embassy in Algeria, the forum saw participation from over 140 Algerian economic operators and a delegation of Polish business leaders representing 15 major Polish companies.
These companies are active in diverse sectors including construction and public works, electricity, agriculture and agricultural product marketing, agricultural machinery and equipment, veterinary products, steel, and consulting.
Kamel Hamenni, President of CACI, lauded the forum’s role in exploring business opportunities between Algerian and Polish operators. He emphasized Algeria’s stable financial and economic environment and its improved business climate, bolstered by recent legal developments related to investment.
Hocine Zaoui, Director General of CACI, described the forum as “an important opportunity to develop and enhance bilateral economic and commercial relations,” underlining Algeria’s strategic position as a gateway to the African market and Poland’s standing as the fifth-largest economy in the European Union. Zaoui stressed the need to intensify economic exchanges to leverage the untapped potential in trade and commerce between the two countries.
Rabah Fassih, Director of Promotion and Support of Economic Exchanges at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, highlighted the forum’s importance in strengthening commercial and economic ties. This initiative follows the Algerian-Polish political consultations in March 2023, which produced several recommendations aimed at boosting economic cooperation.
The forum occurs at a critical juncture where Algeria has implemented numerous reforms to enhance its business climate, including a new investment law, monetary legislation, and legal frameworks related to economic land. Fassih called for increased efforts to expand trade volumes and explore investment opportunities, particularly in sectors where Poland has expertise, such as agriculture, agri-food, energy (notably renewable energy), and agricultural equipment.
Przemyslaw Gumiela, Chargé d’Affaires at the Polish Embassy in Algeria, noted that the forum underscores the dynamic nature of bilateral relations and the interest of Polish companies in developing economic ties and investing in Algeria. He pointed out that the current trade volume has the potential to increase significantly given Algeria’s vast capacity as a major African country and Poland’s economic power in Europe.
Ewa Niemier-Pawlowska, Economic Affairs Officer at the Polish Embassy in Algeria, affirmed Poland’s interest in the “promising” Algerian market and highlighted the importance of Algeria’s recent legislative reforms in the investment sector.
The forum featured bilateral meetings between business leaders from both countries and a presentation by the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI) outlining various investment opportunities in Algeria and the legal frameworks governing them. Additionally, participating Polish companies presented their profiles and interests.
The event concluded with the inaugural session of the Algerian-Polish Business Council, officially established in April 2018. This council aims to serve as an effective tool for promoting economic relations and examining bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Poland.
