Algiers – November 2025 – In a demonstration of its rising geopolitical and industrial influence, Algeria asserted its position as a key partner in international industrial development during the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) General Conference, held Sunday in Riyadh. Representing the country, Mohamed Arkab, Minister of State and Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, delivered a forceful intervention underscoring Algeria’s commitment to expanding cooperation with UNIDO and reinforcing its role within global industrial governance.

Arkab’s participation at the 21st UNIDO General Conference—rebranded this year as the World Industrialization Summit – WIS 2025—highlighted Algeria’s strategic engagement in international industrial diplomacy. The summit brought together ministers, senior government officials, and directors of leading global industrial institutions, offering a high-level platform for shaping the future of industrial transformation and sustainable development.

The Algerian minister reaffirmed his country’s support for the positions issued by the Group of 77 and China, the African Group, and the Arab Group, emphasizing the indispensable role of UNIDO in promoting industrial innovation, developing technical competencies, and assisting nations in confronting global economic and technological challenges. He praised the progress made by the organization’s programs, insisting on the necessity of securing UNIDO’s financial stability and adopting a realistic, efficient budget, while urging member states to honor their financial commitments.

Arkab also highlighted the profound economic reforms undertaken in Algeria under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. These reforms aim to diversify the national economy, strengthen manufacturing industries, promote green and circular economic models, accelerate industrial digitalization, and empower human capital. They also seek to stimulate investment in startups and micro-enterprises, localize high-value technological industries, and position Algeria as a regional hub for innovation and sustainable industrial growth.

A central pillar of Algeria’s strategy lies in its immense potential in renewable energies—particularly solar—due to its advantageous geographical location and exceptional sunlight exposure. This gives the country a natural foundation for developing clean-energy sectors, especially green hydrogen.

In this context, Arkab outlined several major infrastructure and energy projects currently shaping Algeria’s long-term industrial vision. These include the SoutH2 Corridor for exporting green hydrogen to Europe, the MEDLINK electrical interconnection with Italy, and expansive national programs to boost renewable energy production, green hydrogen, and ammonia industries. He welcomed UNIDO’s proposal to supervise the secretariat of the SoutH2 Corridor, stressing its strategic importance in strengthening North–South cooperation and advancing energy transition goals.

The minister further emphasized the growing dynamism of Algeria’s cooperation with UNIDO, with multiple ongoing projects in green and circular economy development, industrial digital transformation, technology transfer, innovation ecosystem support, youth entrepreneurship, micro-enterprise development, and capacity building. Algeria, he affirmed, is eager to expand this collaboration to include new and renewable energies, industrial innovation, value-chain strengthening, and improved investment climate mechanisms.

Arkab also called for aligning UNIDO’s programs with Africa’s development priorities, especially those linked to renewable energy, digital transformation, circular economy, skills development, and technology transfer. He highlighted Algeria’s successful hosting of one of the most impactful editions of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), where UNIDO played an active role. He also referenced Algeria’s historic initiative, launched by President Tebboune, allocating one billion dollars to support development projects in neighboring African countries. Equally significant is Algeria’s readiness to host the fourth edition of the African Startup Forum, a move meant to invigorate entrepreneurial culture and innovation among Africa’s youth—an ambition reinforced by the momentum generated by the IATF.

Concluding his intervention, Arkab urged UNIDO to intensify efforts to immediately launch reconstruction programs for Palestine, particularly in Gaza, where critical infrastructure has been destroyed. He firmly stated that supporting the Palestinian people remains a “fundamental pillar of Algerian foreign policy,” reaffirming Algeria’s unwavering humanitarian and diplomatic stance.
