Algeria Reaches 99% Electricity Coverage as It Embarks on an Ambitious Energy Transition
✍️ BY: Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers – October 2025 – In an affirmation of Algeria’s determination to consolidate its energy sovereignty and modernize its economic foundations, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, announced that the country has achieved an unprecedented 99% electricity coverage, encompassing more than 12.5 million subscribers, while 72% of households—equivalent to 8.2 million homes—are now connected to natural gas.
Presenting his sector’s budget before the Finance and Budget Committee of the People’s National Assembly as part of the 2026 Finance Bill discussions, Adjal emphasized that this achievement stems from the clear vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, whose national development program places energy security and universal access at the forefront of Algeria’s socio-economic agenda.
Since 2002, over 2.4 million homes have been connected to the gas network and 456,000 to the national electricity grid, reflecting the sustained investments and ambitious policies aimed at ensuring equitable access to essential energy services across all regions. Several ongoing projects, the minister confirmed, are nearing completion and will further consolidate Algeria’s energy infrastructure in both urban and rural areas.
Empowering Agriculture and Industry through Energy Access
Beyond household electrification, the energy sector has become a vital enabler of agricultural and industrial growth. Since 2022, over 95,000 agricultural operations have been electrified—a figure expected to reach 100,000 by the end of 2025. Additionally, 43 industrial zones now have access to electricity, while 29 are supplied with natural gas. The program has also led to the electrification of 100 business zones and the gas connection of 71, enhancing productivity and attracting investment throughout the national territory.
In line with global technological shifts, 1,000 charging stations for electric vehicles have been installed nationwide, signaling Algeria’s readiness to embrace the era of sustainable mobility. Complementing these initiatives, the Ministry has launched a nationwide distribution of carbon monoxide detectors through Sonelgaz subsidiaries, and successfully connected five seawater desalination plants to the national electricity grid, ensuring energy reliability for strategic infrastructure.
Renewable Energy: The Next Frontier
Algeria’s energy transition agenda is equally bold. The government has set a target of producing 15,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy by 2035, of which 3,200 MW are already under deployment across 14 wilayas. The country is also positioning itself as a pioneer in green hydrogen production, with a national strategy fully finalized and ready for implementation—an initiative that could redefine Algeria’s role in the regional and global energy landscape.
Algeria, a Rising Regional Energy Hub
Minister Adjal underscored the strategic significance of the North–South Mediterranean interconnection project, which aims to integrate Algeria’s energy network with European grids, solidifying the nation’s status as a regional powerhouse and energy bridge between Africa and Europe.
Sonelgaz, the public utility leading much of this progress, continues to implement major structural projects, expected to generate over 600 new jobs by 2026, nearly half of which will be located in the southern provinces, in line with Algeria’s policy of balanced territorial development.
The 2026 Finance Bill also allocates funding for the establishment of two new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) units in In Guezzam and Bordj Badji Mokhtar, as well as for the equipping of a nuclear research center dedicated to the production of isotopes and radiopharmaceuticals—a strategic step toward reducing imports and enhancing national medical autonomy.
In his concluding remarks, Minister Mourad Adjal commended the dedication of the energy sector’s workforce and the Sonelgaz group, reaffirming that energy remains one of the cornerstones of Algeria’s economic stability, sovereignty, and long-term prosperity.
